Disco 4 Rear Brake service release

    hey team,

I followed Bodsy's great bible (thanks mate!) on the weekend to clean, grease and reset the EPB on my MY2010 D4. But there seems to be some discrepancies between the D3 & D4 and I had a lot of trouble getting the beast into Neutral with the EPB released.

If I select neutral, release the EPB and turn off the engine, it autofrustratingly engages the EPB.

I tried multiple variations of the magic dance with brake pedal and EPB release to no avail. I have a GAP IID tools and even when selecting 'mounting mode', I still couldn't get it into the magic combination.

In the end, what worked for me was:

    1. engine on
    2. connect Gap IID tool
    3. using IID, select Service/IO > Park Brake > Mounting position (hear the EPB drive the cable a looooong way back)
    4. select neutral
    5. pop the bonnet and remove EPB & air compressor fuses
    6. press the start/stop button, wait for the warning to say 'not in park', press it again and the engine stops - with the EPB off

The rest of Body's instructions were pretty much spot on.

    Is there a better way?

(BTW, EPB works a treat now and the motor barely runs when engaging/disengaging)

Did the same job yesterday. Not sure why you need to put the car into Neutral, so I just set the EPB in the mounting position (using Nanacom) and left the car in Park. My model (2013) doesn't automatically apply the EPB. Cleaned out the shoes with compressed air and brakeclean, carefully sprayed a bit of silicone on the moving bits and adjusted them back up. All good. But I only have .35mm above minimum thickness (17mm) on the disks, so will renew the disks, brake shoes and brake pads at next service in about six months.
There must be a way to disable the auto EPB in your model.

Yeah I don’t understand this either. I simply park it, jack it, press the disengage button for the park brake and work on it. It never automatically engages for me. I do it in Park position but that shouldn’t be a factor Disco 4 Rear Brake service release

First I've heard of the EPB engaging automatically. Does it do it when in Park as well? Sound like HDC may be engaging the EPB?

In my MY11, I always, always need to pull up the EPB switch in the cabin to engage and I never drive off with it still engaged. Still running the original EPB shoes.

The reason for putting in neutral is so you can rotate the disc to get to the EPB adjustment screw. Did you guys do the magic tighten till the wheel doesn't move, then back off 8 clicks?

The EPB doesn't engage when in P, just when in N. HDC not on and normal program selected. I had to run out and check again just now

Strange - anyway, pulling the fuse worked for me.

You don’t need to put it in neutral to rotate the wheels. So long as both the rear wheels are off the ground, the open diff allows the rears to rotate.
