Queensland Timbers used for Cabinet Making, Coachbuilding, and Musical Instruments

Hello All,

I just read some posts on a military vehicle restoration forum about Australian timbers different members used for coachbuilding - timber framed parts of their restorations. Part of these posts mentioned how in times gone by the coachbuilders would utilise timbers that were readily available to them within their local area. This prompted me to dig around on the internet for some Queensland timbers. There used to be a very large forestry industry in my district - the Wide Bay and Burnett area of Queensland. When I first moved to town there were three fully functioning sawmills within the city limits. Now there are none.

One result I found was an article that appeared in The Queenslander back in 1924, written by "Silky Oak" under the section 'Forestry'. This must have been a weekend special magazine publication. Anyway, apart from Queensland Timbers for coachbuilding there were also articles for cabinet making and making musical instruments.

Each of the articles make for a very interesting read!

We have an antique coal scuttle made from Queensland maple and I've seen other items for sale in antique shops around Toowoomba. Queensland maple also rings a bell as being used of coachwork in railway carriages.
