Might be upgrading from my Disco 2 to a 3 ?

Hi guys ... after a ton of trouble trying to get parts for my Disco 2 , I am looking at a 2005 Disco 3 S 6 SPEED AUTO ... SHE HAS 330klms on her ... looks great and seems good ..
I was wondering if anyone could give me a heads up on issues with a Disco of this vintage with these klms ... ??

I would love a heads up about anything I should go looking for or issues that these 2005 D3's have that you know about ?

    cheers Steve

With my 05 D3 the biggest (or should I say most expensive) repair has been the auto transmission. So that would be one thing I'd want to be finding out the history of. Rest of the driveline generally doesn't have too many issues - the odd front diff bearing seems to be the most common. Suspension bushes are soft so don't last all that long - mainly the front lower arm is the primary culprit. Suspension air compressor can be a failure point when they get older, and suspension components in general will be starting to be worn by those sort of kms. Engines generally seem ok as long as timing belts are changed on time and there's an upgraded oil pump in place.

Unless its really cheap i would be looking at something with lower k's, like 10k or so. Being an S spec it may be lacking a lot of goodies like air suspension and terrain response, a lot were also cloth trim.

On my 2005 D3 issues were service history. If you don't know the history then the preventative maintenance could be expensive - especially if you're paying to have the work done. Look for things like timing belts, oil pump, water pump and outlet, driveline oil changes and compressor servicing (if you have air suspension).
Check door seals, wiring harness sheathing (it gets brittle with age). Also look for connectors held together with zip-ties, a sign of possible abuse. The turbo air hoses, especially the long one may need replacement. I also had a damaged turbo cooler which adversely affects fuel scheduling and causes a lot of smoke at the exhaust.
I had some challenges with wiring ultimately caused by a chafed wire in the CANbus system.

Loved my 2005 perhaps more than my now 2009 D3. My 05 had steering rack, gear box and other usual suspects replaced. Its was going to 500,000+km traveled before the hail harmed my relationship with an insurance company

The air suspension hoses had not been replaced. One airline fitting was replaced during a long drive in remote NSW once. I have a airline repair kit unused in my newer D3! There are heaps for sale on ebay now. Mine was locally happily.

The D3 is a great leap in capability, comfort and complexity over a D2. The D3S on coils perhaps slightly less so on both fronts.

Complexity means there is more to go wrong, and they like other makers used more plastic around the engine bay than previously.

As i said at the beginning they are a leap in capability, comfort (on and off road) and complexity. Complexity costs, that’s a reality. Plastic ages more quickly than metal.

The petrol motors in that era seem more reliable than the diesels, but both a nice motors. If its a diesel then timing belt changes need to be verified, but at least you will have the option of swapping to a Ford territory motor if its a diesel.

The auto output shaft and tc input gear are not lubricated so you can be looking at new drive train unless its already been done.
