Defender tds earth question

Team, I have a 2000 td5 defender, I had to recondition the steering box...when I removed the box...there was a wire connected to one of the four bolts on the top of the steering box...I have not seen this before and wonder if anyone knows what it might be for? I have now replaced the box...but not the mysterious wire...and the vehicle will not longer starts...I'm thinking it was am earth of some sort...any suggestions??

I've never seen one earthed there, but I'm guessing the non start might have answered your question.

Maybe another earth failed and that was a shortcut fix.

Yeah, it was new to me too...anyway..I guess I'll run a new earth chassis to gearbox and see what happens...once I've replaced the hand brake cable....haha...thanks
