Exhaust filter full. Oil change fixes?

Hi legends.

we’ve got a 2017 Disco Sport. Last week the red Exhaust filter full light came on saying visit dealer. The yellow engine light came on as well. But if a surprise as the yellow DPF light came up the week before so I took it immediately for the obligatory 20min drive over 60. Light went off. Two days later also drove to the country so a 4 hour round trip.

We’ve had DPF issues before so had it towed straight to the dealer for a look. They fixed under warranty and said it required oil and filter changed (see attached).

How does that work? How does the oil affect the DPF filter?

Sorry All. Here’s the text on the invoice we got (no charge).

Check engine and DPF lamp on Misc oil dilution is at 10%. requires oil and filter change. This is affecting the DPF burn. hence DPF light on Carried out DPF burn after Oil dilution service. all ok.

Absolutely no idea. Ironically the car is booked in for a service next week so I’ll ask when I’m there. Was just wondering if anyone knew what the comments were about or any past experience.

Yep that's right Ron. All diesels do get fuel dilution to some degree. On the larger marine engines I used to work on with oil analysis program in place the limit was 5% before we changed the oil if a scheduled change wasn't due.

Doing a lot of short trips is bad for oil dilution, as well is a leaking injector or the high pressure fuel pump.

And DPF burn off in any vehicle that uses late cycle injection to put raw diesel into the exhaust flow.

So essentially even though we follow the directions around DPF burn off, etc it's going to happen again and again because of driving style (as in city, short trips)? Anyway to stop it from happening?

The Jap/Thia/Korean vehicles generally do a DPF burn,by directly injecting diesel into the DPF,so cant dilute the engine oil.
Many also have a DPF guage and burn switch.

A mate has had two BMW sedans,both had continual DPF issues,whether they were driven on long trips,or short trips.
One had 4 new DPF's under warranty, fitted by the dealer.

He has recently sold the second one and picked up nice a D4

Having a diesel with a DPF as a city car is not the best idea and even Land Rover itself says the same. Should I Buy A Diesel Car? | JLR Corporate Website

After a little reading about the Disco sport and it's DPF, apparently the DPF is quite a long way down the exhaust and as such it takes a bit longer to heat up to perform a good regeneration. So the normal 20min drive on a freeway might not be long enough.

Depending on where you live in Melbourne I'd plan a brunch every 2nd week in Gelong, Rosebud or somewhere up the Hume so you can get a good regeneration until the green DPF light comes on. I'd also change the oil at 6 months between your annual servicing.

If you do those 2 things you should be ok.

Or I just had a look at Carsales and if you wanted to stay with a Disco Sport you could sell your diesel and change to a petrol and put a couple of grand in your pocket.

Unfortunately GM were the first to patent injecting fuel directly into the DPF to burn off deposits. I assume that they charge too much for licensing, so most companies use late diesel injection, which has a lot of drawbacks, including oil dilution.
