    Rotary Selector Not Rising

    Hi All,

Just returned from Wedge Island where were had a great weekend in our camper parked at a mates shack.

Upon staring car to leave, the rotary selector failed to rise. Turned car off and on and it raised OK. Drove home and a couple of starts in drive way for moving camper around and it's been OK on one occasion, came up halfway and some warnings popped up (which a restart fixed) on the other occasion. On recollection it was 'slow' to raise yesterday, so seems to be getting worse.

    Once raised, it works normally.

I've done some searching but most threads are about the stuck in 'D' or 'P' issue.

Can anyone shed any light on this? It there a preventative measure I can do?

Also, yes, it's a **** design - The one thing I'm not a fan of on the car. NB: I like the electronic oil level reader...

It is about to fail. Probably repairable with a new solenoid or a bit of soldering. Simple solution is to cough up the $800 or so for a new one and fit it yourself. Then fix up the old one if possible to carry as a spare.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it is getting jammed by grains of sand. So I’d be disabling and cleaning first.

This was my first thought. We do a lot of beach driving so it's plausible.

Interestingly, its worked as normal for three starts since I posted.

Having a spare is appealing. It was an interesting feeling sitting there with the engine going and no knob to turn...

Believe it or not, I carry a new one as a spare part just in case. There's nothing wrong with the one in the car, but a dead one is such a showstopper that I'd rather pre-pay for the part on the off chance that I had a failure in the bush. I forget the other parts I carry as they were permanently stored in the car shortly after I bought it. Definitely a brake switch, one front and one rear ABS sensor and perhaps height sensors front and rear? Other stuff, too. Better check my list!

That's a good list of spares.

Just an update for anyone following along at home. Since posting, it's worked perfectly on >6 occasions. I think some sand caused the issues and has now worked out of the mechanism. I think a disassembly and clean will be prudent.
