Expected water usage 2016 SDV6

Hi all,

Replacement engine is smooth as silk and going well after about 4,000 kms now. Fuel consumption for mixed city and rural driving is roughly 9.8, which I think is better than I was getting.

What I have noticed though that I don't recall before, is I am having to top up the water regularly in the overflow bottle. This doesn't seem normal, and I don't recall having to do this before. I have had it back to the dealer and the pressure tested the system with no fault, but as the engine has been replaced I am obviously keen to find any issues whilst it is still going to be a warrantly issue. For reference, the "water level low" or whatever warning it is came up after about 3,000kms and I had to top up the overflow bottle. Now it seems to drop maybe an inch every couple of weeks.

Any thoughts on water usage and potential causes? Or normal consumption? I did a search, but couldn't find anything.

There is no such thing. I don't even top mine up between coolant replacements. If you are losing it, it's going somewhere.

We had a pinhole leak in the EGR cooler hose behind the fan that took the mechanics months to fart around with and not locate. I did a pressure test in the driveway and heard it immediately, but the pressure test itself didn't indicate an issue. As in the leak was so small as to effectively not drop any pressure for hours, but we were losing a considerable amount of water.

Also check that is not in the transmission fluid. But Brad's right.. They don't use coolant at all. Period

No engine should use coolant.

Years ago i had a VS HSV 5.0L Dunny Door,long story short,dealer could not find coolant leak,i noticed two drops of coolant on the garage floor one day,water pump replaced,issue gone.

Thanks guys, I didn't think it should use any. Had not touched it for the previous 100,000kms. It's only a small amount, but it does worry me as to where it is going.

I will get it back to the dealer for further inspection.

The water outlet housing is prone to splitting, leaking a little initially but will in time split apart with instant loss of the coolant and a high probability of overheating the engine.

Did the engine replacement involve two new EGR valves. I have experienced small coolant loss, pressure test showed no prob. of note. I was recommended to replace the RHS (driver) as I understand coolant can be lost via a faulty EGR valve and the subject coolant disapears out the exhaust. Cheers, hope you get it sorted.
My current coolant, (new and new bottle) is now falling slightly and I'm closely monitoring this - maybe our LHS EGR valve is also in need of replacement!!
