    Second S2A purchase in a week... :)

I guess I've fallen in love with the Series 2 vehicles again. I learned to drive a little when I was about 12 years old on our farm in Mudgee in our old S2 tabletop. I've always loved them since then. After buying one for my boss last week, I've decided to get myself one, restore it - and do my part to help maintain that magical "70% of all Land Rovers ever built are still on the road today" claim made by Top Gear.

We were just coming back from Cooma through Cantberra and decided to pop in and have a look at a 1972 S2A that was for sale in one of the local rags for $500. It was described as being in "fair" condition and came with a sun roof ().

Anyway - apart from the dreadful condition of the paint (I'll be stripping it completely and starting again) it is in pretty good nick. The chassis goes "dinggg" when you tap it with a ball-peened hammer, and the firewall is reasonable, but could do with attention. The roof is in excellent condition under the diabolocal paint (in fact it gleams like new alloy) BUT has a bloody UGLY sunroof in it!!! Sacriledge!!!!! It comes out and will be replaced with a sheet of alloy and a new centre rib. The rest of the body is very straight. It also has dual fuel tanks - one on either side of the vehicle with individual fillers.

The engine is a good 'ol red motor and runs pretty well apparently. The dash needs to be reconstructed with an original from somewhere. The interior roof is covered in lovverly brown shag pile.

Apart from that, the only thing that needs re-work is the front end panneling. The previous owner though that it'd be cool to turf the original light positions (inboard of the wings) and then butchered the front wings to insert semi-rectangular abominations there - right into the front panels - from the front!!! LOL. No doubt I'll investigate either replacing or reparing these. The original spots are blaked over. Eek.

    The bull bar goes.

Here are a few piccies. The album (60-odd photos) is located at the following URL for those that are interested:

Chris I don't care about a sunroof (just another way to get out, when in trouble) will the top unbolt from the walls? If so we could do a roof top swap perhaps just an idea.

    Hey there Mat

Yup - it comes off no problems. Apart from the damn sunroof, the roof is in pristine condition. I mean it gleams underneath the paint, and it's perfectly straight.

I'll get it home first and see what we do then. Thanks for the offer though - if you want the sunroof it's yours!

Only need it as an escape hatch on rainy days when the roof is on. I'll get mine up and legally running first. Thankyou anyway Chris. Like I said my roof is also very good so if the match up we could swap the lot. The only problem I could possibly see is your canopy window. Mines a swinging back door

Looks good steve, i agree about getting rid of those square lights, doesnt look right.

Have the headlight holes next to the grill been filled?

One more thing, bugger that red motor off and put a 2 1/4 petrol. Matt

    Chris Matt... Chris.

The lights will change back to ridgy didgy round.

Not sure about the motor. Red motor repairs can be done by anyone, anywhere. We'll see. Apparently this one pulls well too. We couldn't test it because the battery was removed by the owners sone - to prevent theft no doubt. We'll go back down next week to pick it up and see then.

    Cheers

It's hard to tell what's under what, but yes, it has red under the green in some areas. The previous owner had used whatever house paint was handy to protect the alloy as best he could until he was going to restore it. In hindsight - a good idea as the alloy skin is actually in fantastic nick generally. Not bad for sitting there 15 years.....
