Front Bumper Disassembly

Hello

Just wondering if anyone has successfully disassembled and reassembled the front bumper - namely separating the painted section from the unpainted lower section and then successfully reassembling it. If so, how? Bumper is already off the vehicle.

I can't answer your question definitively but I've had mine off recently and need to take it off again soon (to repair a slightly bodged hidden winch installation). I had a look at this too - it seems that in some places the tabs are passed through the other section and then melted on to bond the sections together. It's polypropylene so presumably if you melt too much material off to separate the two, you can weld (/melt) some more back on to put it back together again... not sure if that helps much.

I will probably have mine off this weekend so if I come up with anything I'll come back and post here.

Yes, I saw that welding too, hence the question. I know PP isn't the easiest to glue/bond but I wondered if that might be the way to reassemble assuming a suitable adhesive could be found.

I think I may end up answering my own question. Getting the two parts separated was surprisingly easy. Putting them back together may be a different matter of course ...

Hi Sol,

I'm no expert but PP is definitely particularly difficult to glue. Melting / welding seems to be more reliable...

Let us know how you go.

Why did you want to separate it ?

If you need some PP to put it back together on drop me a DM - I have some spare 'sticks' - I'll send you a couple.

Thanks David - will take you up on that. I’m prepping it for repainting a different colour as part of facelifting a 2013 D4. Trying to keep costs down at the paint shop and it means I can get into all the tight corners.

Are there sufficient material surfaces and access to fit small machine screws and nuts to attach the components together? This in conjunction with the correct Sikaflex product might provide a fix.
