    Side Mount Jerry Can Holders

    I am considering getting some Front Runner Side Mount jerry can holders for my space-challenged Defender 90. Has anyone used them or can make a recommendation?

    they seem quite popular on a number of customers Defenders.
    As with most Front Runner stuff, they quite readily rust.

    While I'm not one to jump in with oh but thats not legal bluh bluh... i do ponder such a thing looking at them, considering antenna mounts and the likes on ex-army Land Rovers arent legal.

    Love them, thinking of another. Quick Azz camping in Aussie shipped mine to NZ. Great to deal with.

    I agree their stuff rusts, they don’t seem to undercoat any of it. The packaging they use is often really not suitable and bits fly around inside chipping the paint. I guess I have returned 90% of front runner metal gear because of chipped paint or other damage in transit.
    Though I must admit the Wolf Pack pro storage box’s seem pretty good so far.

    My view is that in Victoria anything mounted on the side of vehicle is illegal. And a large number of the canopies and roof-top tents I see are also illegal because they're sticking out so far from the body of the vehicle. Why don't the cops crack down on it? Because they couldn't care less, which is why Melbourne is being over-run by illegal e-bikes and e-scooters. Nothing will happen until someone is killed.

    They would have to be ADR compliant I guess, so that would over rule state laws wouldn’t it?

    ADRs are technical, but ADR 42.9 does prohibit external protrusions:

    42.9. EXTERNAL OR INTERNAL PROTRUSIONS
    42.9.1. No vehicle must be equipped with:
    42.9.1.1. any object or fitting, not technically essential to such vehicle, which protrudes from any part of the vehicle so that it is likely to increase the risk of bodily injury to any person;
    42.9.1.2. any object or fitting technically essential to such vehicle unless its design, construction and conditions and the manner in which it is affixed to the vehicle are such as to reduce to a minimum the risk of bodily injury to any person;
    42.9.1.3. any object or fitting which, because it is pointed or has a sharp edge, is likely to increase the risk of bodily injury to any person; or
    42.9.1.4. any bumper bar the end of which is not turned towards the body of the vehicle to a sufficient extent to avoid any risk of hooking or grazing.

    My recollection is that the old Victorian road rules specifically said that you couldn't have anything hanging off the side of vehicle, but the national rules appear to be less prescriptive.

    Having extra fuel my D90 60L tank is technically essential, I'm not sure it protrudes (much?) wider than the rock/tree sliders/wheel flares, and the round edges of the jerrycan are safer than sharp edges. But I will remove the jerrycan when I go for a warrant of fitness (NZ) next month

    Inside the vehicle footprint.

    Look at the mirrors - widest point.

    Like any DC Ute you see with tray/canopy protruding beyond the door line.
