Zf 6 temperature sensor

Hi all , I have a d4 6 speed that’s not changing gears nicely, noticed the temperature sensor of gearbox is reading -40 degrees. Tried doing gearbox adaption process but it won’t let me as sensor is out of range.
Looks like the valve body needs to come off to get to the sensor but not sure, can’t seem to find sensor location on gearcase exploded view diagram
Anyone else had this?

The temp sensor is in the mechatronic assembly that bolts to the valve body, i dont believe its a separate part to replace.

I would rebuild the valve body first, put a zip gen2 kit through, new solenoids, mech and pump seals, steel pan, filter and gasket, then you should be able to reset the adaptations.

Could the sensor be experiencing a corroded connector somewhere? Maybe part of a larger junction for the gearbox? Assuming you aren't in the arctic circle somewhere, -40deg seems unlikely, so I agree the sensor, or associated connectivity sounds dicky.

This is the danger of people with diagnostic tools and no knowledge of the functions.

Gearbox adaptation process is for rebuilds etc, not for oil changes or electronic gremlins.
Doing it without proper cause can make for terrible transmission behaviour as it resets clamping pressures and other adjustments.
It can even make a working transmission that was just about worn out - fail.


As per others, the sensor is unlikely to have failed - a connection beyond the external plug is more likely to be playing up.
If thats not the case - you should do as Eric suggests - then you can press the adaptations button

check the mechatronic connector and sleeve for fluid leaks.
