What are the Current Rules for Fog Lamps

As standard, my 1976 Jag XJ5.3C is fitted with yellow fog lamps. They operate through the main light switch (a detent position that has to be deliberately selected) and when selected all other front lights go out (tail lights still on) I guess working like they use to in the good ole days.

Now my RRS with its white foglamps - normally they are selected with the headlamps on but can also be selected with just the parkers on.

So is it legal these days to drive with just fog lights on or is there a requirement to also have other lights on in the front. I assume the Jag totally meets 1976 ADRs.

from the last time read through the rules.

fog lights arent to be on unless you're in fog.

having them fitted is legal, but they must work IAW the OEM install spec.

IIRC you cant just go and retrofit your own system.

That implies that my Jag lights may actually be legal and my much later RRS could be technically illegal. Those NSW rules imply that fog lights may only be used with parkers - where I can select the fogs to be on with any front light configuration as they can selected on. The switch on the Jag turns the other front lights off.

That document refers to after-market lamps and furthermore states should, not must only be used in conjunction with parking lamps, so is only a recommendation.

The assumption would be that everything factory fitted was ADR compliant at the time.ADRs change, often, but are nor retrospective. Last time I needed to worry about them the situation was as the OP's Jag, Main Lamps had to be off, and weather visibility had to be degraded before fogs could be used. then, Euro cars and a whole lot of bogan utes got what they called "Low intensity Driving Lights". The bogan utes seemed to somehow increase their intensity, and aim.

Current rules., which is what the OP actually asked for.
