*as it is a 2.4, as already mentioned, the FCV, flow control valve is a common failure.
*other systems are poor starting, some clacky engine running.

*crankshaft position sensor is my guess, common fault on a 2.4 and rarely if ever brings up a fault code.

Interesting... my local LR mechanic has seen a couple of Turbo failures whereby the Turbo lets oil past and it gets trapped in the IC and builds up to the point where the engine then runs away on Engine Oil & destroys the engine.

I'm in a situation where my 2.4 is using starting to use Engine oil (about 1ltr/4000kms) and from what I can see there is no Blue smoke coming out the exhaust. When I take the engine oil filler cap off while engine it running I notice that the cap will not sit there but the local LR mechanic did mention that these engines do breath heavily and don't read too much into it. He also said that these 2.4's don't usually burn oil either.

I've checked my Air Intake for dust ingress and it's all good...

anyone with ideas/experiences as to what it might be as to why I've started to use engine oil (engine has 231,000kms on it)?

The vehicle has been remapped and performs and runs perfectly otherwise but there is a bit of blow by which may or may not be normal??

    thanks in advance...

What's the exhaust tip like, Rob?
Worth looking in the IC and hoses for oil residue, too.

Yep was going to suggest same… can see a little oil in IC hose in one of my pics. I’m not sure how much b4 it is a worry… but that is a lot of oil to go through in that distance.

Do you ever drain the IC? Oil will always accumulate in an IC so maybe drain it now and again in 5K kms to see what comes out.

There's definitely oil residue in the IC hoses but that's to be expected... but the question is how much is too much? I'll have to remove the IC and check how much oil is in it...

To this point I haven't drained the IC but will... I'm more interested in people's experiences with their Turbos and whether there is many (if any) people that have replaced their Turbos, etc due to oil usage, etc?

What grade of oil do people use in their 2.4 Tdci's?

I use a 5w30 Full Syn but have been told to try and use a slightly thicker oil (5w40) but I'm not sure if that will make a difference

The copper seal at the end of the injector where it mates with the head can fail, and cause oil use. Compression gases escape into the rocker cover, increase blowby and oil into the inlet. Was a problem with Hiluxes and others, so maybe the 2.4 as well.

My 2.4 had the issue as described by Brid. I was draining 100+ mL from the catch can drain every 1000 km. When inspected, the injectors were also damaged, so were replaced. All good now and fuel economy has also improved.

Good luck solving your vehicle's problem.

    Cheers, Jason

    just to add...

*common that injector copper seals need doing if you have signs of excessive blowby.
*both the 2.4 / 2.2 can have that blue smoke on idle especially if they have had a life on a 5w30/40, changing over to a 10w40 will cure this. I have plenty of customers I run 10w40 in and they are at 300 - 400K.
*turbo failures on a 2.4 do happen just like the previous model Defender TD5, its just not common.
    Regards
