Don Quixote project well under way, but....

Hi, RRS users/lovers/haters. Nice winter in Victoria ATM.

Now, I have put a replacement engine in after body off. Reinstalled everything, runs like a clock.

The ECU installation behind the battery had been partly dismantled before I got the car for its resurrection cycle. So I don't have any obvious clues about any smaller cable connections/colour-tracer/important stuff to make canbus work correctly, I suspect.

The problem I have encountered is that the EPB does not work and nor does the suspension. The faults are U0128 BUS signal/message failure (Lost comms with parking brake module) and C1131 (component failure - performance or incorrect operation).

Does anyone have any clues about my next diagnostic step? The wiring diagrams 204-05 Air suspension, pages 1 and 2 will be adequate, I think. 418-00 Comms Network will also help me troubleshoot the system. Location of air suspension control module? Any links in the passenger side wiring harness space? Would anyone have a picture of the links/connections (other than the ecu plugs - they are ok, I believe).

A big ask, I know, but any clues would be a bonus.

    Cheers all.

Check the big plug pack that sits on the chassis rail behind the left rear wheel (assuming same location as D3) as this is a main canbus harness and is known to cause issues.

Just about to hit the hoist. We'll soon see. Cheers for the hint.

Well, not that anything untoward was seen there at the rear lh wheel well.

Would there be about the place a Connector quick reference guide for 2008 build RRS? Or even a place where one could be found or even shared?

The suspension control module is high up on the driver's A-pillar.

The transfer case module is a gateway for the lesser important ecus such as suspension and EPB. IIRC the D3/early L320's TCCM is located behind the battery so its connections may have been disturbed. It is also unsealed, open at the bottom and the contacts can become corroded.

Graeme, thanks for that heads-up. I have removed and uncovered that TCM, deployed the circuit board cleaner and revarnished it.

I will reinstall and test tomorrow. Hopefully that will at least let me in. 5 of the faults are U0128 - Lost comms with xxxx. Does this indicate what I think you are suggesting, that gateway entry will reinstate CAN comms?

    Cheers

Yes. It used to be a common fault when D3s went for a bit of a swim, sometimes requiring a replacement module. Ensure that the terminals in the connector shells are in good condition too if the pcb contacts weren't so good.

raeme, after your advice and action I have recovered a small amount of suspension information, but the canbus fault is still logged. I am thinking that the EPB module may have gone to God.

    Thanks for the help.

EPB modules aren't known to give canbus faults, only jamming and destroying gears.

What faults now and what do you mean regarding the suspension?

Is your vehicle a D3 or an RRS?

Graeme, I'll print the faults and send them to you as they are displayed. There are a couple that are obviously associated with the body off period, but the others are mainly associated with U0128. I have a set of gears set to go for the EPB module, and a replacement RHS cable that had been somehow chewed, I think by the retention loop on the lower arm. PO reckoned that everything worked when he parked it up 2 years ago.

The vehicle we are working on is 2008 RRS, SALLSAA139Axxxxxx. 2.7l diesel auto.
