Question MY09 D3 HK Logic 7 Nav + DVD - add reverse cam and CarPlay?

I have an MY09 D3 which I believe had the vehicle entrainment options all selected - Harmon Kardon Logic7, navigation and DVD player with screens for the middle row passengers.

I'm wanting to add Wireless Apple CarPlay and reverse camera in. The easiest method seems to be via fitment of an aftermarket headunit, but the fitting kits seem to have shortfalls costing loss of factory options:

Connects2 option looses the factoring navigation and DVD setup.

InCarTec option looks like it can retain the Navigation screen (it doesn't confirm about the DVD setup) but requires an additional extra lead to keep the navigation audio (DVD audio too?) to only the front speakers, and it looses the Logic7 amplifier so the centre speaker is lost and then another amplifier is required to be sourced and fitted in order to retained the subwoofer.

    Is there other options?

Could a reverse camera be added to the factory navigation screen?
And then perhaps one of those seperate wireless CarPlay screens used to feed audio into the original head unit via 3.5mm cable?

    I have this : NAVIPLUS. COM.AU.

Seamlessly integrates with the vehicle units. I have a single button hidden under the HVAC console that allows me to switch between Carplay / Caravan Camera / LR Nav. The only downside is if I'm listening to the radio or a CD I have to push the Aux button on the stereo when the phone rings to switch over the audio. If I'm using the phone for music then it's already there. Even the LR voice control still works.

I added the phone buttons to the steering wheel, so they work also.

Other than the hidden button there's no outward sign the vehicle has been modified.

    That's the one.

I took the positive supply off the antenna connection at the back of the head unit where it didn't work at all, and connected it to fuse 5 in the CJB using an Add-a-fuse. That way it starts to boot the second I insert the ignition key and doesn't drop out while starting the car.

    Thanks.

    CJB - central junction box?

From what I've read you also had some trouble with the switching of yours and had to add a seperate switch? Could you tell me more about that please?

Central junction box. Fuse 5 gets power as soon as you insert the key. The problem I had was the guys that made the loom tried to use the antenna power supply from the back of the head to power the system. My head couldn’t supply enough current. That’s where fuse 5 came in. Other than that it was literally plug and play.

i also bought a short and very thin hdmi cable. The one they supplied was like a python.

I've just re-read that question. Yes, I did add a separate switch, but not for on/off. The switch allows me to cycle through the displays :
Carplay -> Caravan rear camera -> Landrover Nav.

The GVIF has 2 auxiliary composite inputs and you can enable/disable them with DIP switches on the unit. I only have one enabled currently and I have the GVIF composite output routed to the RSE Aux 1 input. That allows me to put the Caravan rear camera on the rear seat displays so the kids get a rear view while we're on the move.

The switch came with the kit, it's just normally not used, but it's the only way to switch from Carplay to the original NAV. By adding the extra input I just cycle through the 3 of them. It's hidden under the HVAC console so you can't see it at all from the seats. I can then just reach down and cycle the display if I want to change it. To be honest, when I'm towing it's always on the Van Cam and the phone is on the IID live value page. If I don't know where I'm going I get the organic speed limiter in the passenger seat to navigate.

I uhmmed and ahhd about spending the bucks originally, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat. If nothing else it's the easiest "factory look" method of fitting a reversing camera. Oh, on the reversing camera you need a +12V signal to trigger that. It can't pick up the CAN bus. I used another Add-a-fuse from the trailer reverse light fuse (10 from memory) and I use that to power the camera and signal the GVIF. I have that connected to the harness with a bullet connector.

When you select reverse, the vehicle reversing camera overrides anything on the display. I don't want that if I have the van on the back so I pop the glove box and disconnect the bullet connector. That disables the reversing camera and lets me leave the van cam up while reversing.

I have an idea for a little circuit to disable the reversing camera when it detects a valid PAL signal from the van cam, but it's been this way for 3 years now and you can't rush these things.

Thanks BradC. Do you have any issues with the brightness of the factory screen being dull, or poor quality resolution?

Nope. Looks great. The Carplay resolution is native, so there's no fuzziness or scaling issues. It's not as pretty when displaying composite inputs, but that's no different to the TV or DVD inputs.

There are a number of tweaks possible with the GVIF, and I did spend a while playing with the video settings to get a result I was happy with (brightness and gamma mainly) but I haven't touched it in 3 years now.

    Thanks.

How are the GVIF tweaks (adjustments such as brightness) made?

What’s the audio quality like? I’ve read reports on the HK Logic7 systems audio being poor for auxiliary inputs as they’re not digital (comparatively, CD and DVD digital inputs are meant to be much higher sound quality). Given the Naviplus integrates into the navigation input I assume it’s a digital audio input which would favour the HK Logic7 system?
