it's easy enough for a home mechanic to change the EGR valve. it's located on the passenger side at the back of the block. bit tight and being low at the back, its a balancing act to hold your composure to use 2 hands. soak the bolts in a penetrant over night to help break the nut. They are not expensive and if the 2.4 you might find the part is common to the Transit van and some peugeots that used that engine, likewise the 2.2 might be common to the Ranger. find the part number and search on google for cross reference part numbers. They clog with carbon soot. If you are a tight arse, you could try a carbon cleaner on the internals before buying a new unit.
MLD
Current: (Diggy) MY10 D130 ute, locked F&R, air suspension and rolling on 35's.
Current: (but in need of TLC) 200tdi 110 ute & a 300tdi 110 ute.
Current: (Steed) MY11 Audi RS5 phantom black (the daily driver)
Gone: (Dorothy) MY99 TD5 D110
Obviously depending upon your country and region you live in, it may or may not be legal to disable the egr
as others have said, cleaning etc or try running some Cost Effective Maintenance - decarbonizer through the tank, its actually extremely good with regards to sticky egr, sticky turbo vanes, lubing injectors, problematic dpf.

SupporterFollowing recommendations from you and others here I am now using the decarbonizer in all my Defenders. I started with the Td5 and the improvement is impressive. Immediately the white/grey smoke disappeared and acceleration is now much smoother and more power probably back where it was years ago! Still only on the second tank so I guess more improvement to come as gunk is burnt off and things free up. 300Tdi also on second tank and running much smoother again with more power. The 2.2 Puma is on its first tank (wife drives most the time) but certainly there is all round improvement in performance and smoothness.
Great stuff, thanks again for the heads up.
Cheers
