The tacho in a Defender is driven by an AC signal from one phase of the alternator via the W terminal. It’s not driven by a pulse as was done 50 years ago.
Have been upgrading ny300tdi 130 dash and gauges. Have fitted an Eling gps speedo with tachometer. Can anybody help with the “pulse” number required. Have been googling with no luck. The fitting instructions are not at all helpful. Thanks in advance.

						Hi Cooperrat,
It sounds like the tacho is looking for a hall effect output pulse, like a crank position sensor, a 300Tdi doesn't have such a thing.
On a 300Tdi the tacho is normally driven from the AC frequency in the alternator before it's rectified into DC.
If your gauge is looking for a pulse, I think you'll have to set up something on the harmonic balancer.
FWIW a GPS speedo is not legal in Australia, that said I don't know how anyone would tell unless they were looking for it for some reason.

Thanks for replies I have 5he tacho lead on the W terminal. The tacho was still asking for a magic number to set the needle in its required position. By adjusting the numbers I did finally get it to show idle at around 700rpm. Will be taking the wagon out for a trip tomorrow. I had read that the gos speedos were illegal in Australia, but as said “ who will know” unless they look.

SupporterDon't ADR rules apply to vehicles manufactured on or after the date of the ADR?
So current ADR for instrumentation is ADR 18/03, which applies to vehicles made on our after July 1 2006.
You would need to find the ADR that was current when each particular vehicle was released.
So my 05 defender would need to meet an older ADR.
I'm not sure what difference that would make re GPS Speedos, but it could be worth checking -- if I'm right.
I clarified the use of GPS directly with the authorities years ago.
They said it cant be used as the primary speed indicating device because it doesn't work in all conditions.

You’re correct re the ADRs, but Slunnie’s post probably answers the question. GPS is not accepted as speed measurement in most legal circumstances.
I am with you to a point. I really wanted one for my OKA, but it won’t pass any roadworthy test. There’s the added complication of not being able to transfer the recorded mileage to the new device.
