bugger, that was on my list of places to visit. I wonder if it will get rebuilt?
Just heard on the news, Craig's hut has been lost to the victorian bushfires.![]()
For the uninitiated, craig's hut was the "movie set" hut built on Mt. sterling especially for the movie "the man from snowy river". It was rebuilt in 1993 as more of tourist attraction.
Of course, no cattleman in their right mind would build a hut there, but it did have a magnificent view.

Attenborough, the hut was originally in the Sheepyard Flat area when filming then moved near Mt Stirling.
How ironic......It was maintained by the Mansfield C.F.A.
I agree, they are sure to rebuild it.... 1,000's of people every year visit it... and they have just rebuilt the car park
I hope not too many of the "real" huts go...
You can rebuild something like Craigs - cause it is really a fake. ( I nice fake.... but a fake just the same.)
Places like Wallaces hut (the oldest in Vic) are a little harder to replace...
In the 2003 fires dozens of huts went... it's sad to see real bush history disappear... even if it is inevitable.

Reminds me of something I learned when I visited Port Arthur - I wondered why the buildings had not been preserved better after the convict settlement ended. I found that they were, but with the lack of labour they got pretty overgrown and about twenty years later there was a bushfire.....Originally Posted by Bytemrk

Yes, the ground around there is apparently "too fragile an ecosystem" for 4WDs to traverse, so they've excavated a massive car park and put in a gravel road - because earthworks don't affect tree roots!!!Originally Posted by Bytemrk
This is the website of the Victorian High Country Huts Association. They were heavily involved in rebuilding huts after the 2003 fires. I am sure they will update their site with huts damaged from these fires when the surveys are done.
