RRC 79 box & TC into an 81?

    Hi All

I have the opportunity of a 79 RRC I only really want the gearbox, maybe the Transfer case as well, (maybe) I'm pretty sure they will but I want to double check will they drop strraight into my 81?

My gear box is grinding in reverse and requires pressue to change gear into 3rd sometimes any how I think it would be a cheaper/easier option than a rebuild.

Sounds like you have a clutch disengagement problem rather than a gearbox problem. I would check the clutch hydraulics before I did any major surgery.

sorry i didnt explain properly, once it's in reverse gear its fine but if I don't stop completely and maybe even let the revs die down and try reverse it will crunch into gear, fine when running, fine out.
Third gear sometimes does not engage, (but does not crunch at all) so rather than forcing it, (obviously not a good idea) I move it back into second then into third again then it's fine, also fine while driving and out of gear again.

I thought it was the syncros?

There is no synchro fitted on reverse gear ... Not surprised you sometimes have engagement issues.

As far as 3rd gear is concerned, will it grind if you try to get it into gear, or is it like there is no slot for the gear lever to shift into. There might be a selector issue, rather than a more serious problem.

Maybe some of the more knowlegdable site members can comment.

The box and transfer will fit no probs and as they are cast in one unit you have to change both, 81's had a slight change in ratio but you wont even notice it.

    thanksloanrangie

    re: the fault
yes it's like there is no slot there, but if I change gear then go back it's there.
I have never been game enough to force it.
