    Accelerometer for GPS

    Hi all,

Does anybody know of any GPS Software for PC that has the ability to function as an accelerometer? If I knew more about how GPS coding works I reckon it wouldn't be too hard to write your own applet, if the GPS measures the change in speed and a clock to give the time, then it should be able to put change in speed over time and give an instantaneous acceleration in ms-2

Of course it would be much easier to see if a program already existed. It would be interesting to find the theoretical maximum acceleration of the Disco Tdi before its tuned and after

Your solution is probably the best... and the cheapest! It seems USB accelerometers can be bought, bit expensive though.

For a Landrover you could use the minute hand on your watch, couldn't you?

I have one on my pocket PC which I is called "GPS Dash". It has all the functions you need when going on a trek. Speed, Compass, Waypoints, altimeter, average speed, max speed, distance travelled. It all displays as dash board gauges so its easy to read on the run and can be personalised to only display what you want to look at in anolog or digital format.

When I can get back into my car (as my wife has gone to work with all the keys) I will see which mob wrote the software and see if its transferable.

I know when using TomTom to navigate to an address it will give you klm's and eta to your destination and will recalculate as you travel so maybe if you drive a set timed route before and after you can compare the times ?

The download website for gps dash is here

It is a very usefull program including lats and longs, headings and bearings distance in kms, miles or knots, distance travelled, to go, ETA's, charts, speed, acceleration, altitude and ascent current, average, min and max. mileage counter, satilite reception and dilution info, local and universal time, maps and chart info.

The version i have is v2.23. I think there up to v2.58 so it probably has a few more features.
