    Earth Strap

Can anyone tell me the actual location of the earth strap between the engine (TDV6) and the chassis?

A pic would be really appreciated

    Richard:
    From my references:
The battery earth cable terminates to the body behind LH front wheel arch liner.
The engine terminates to the earth system by cable/s from the cylinder head/s terminated with dedicated bolts.ie not attached to a bolt used to hold something else on.
I have no idea what is at the other end of this cable/s or where it goes after it/they leaves the cylinder head/s!
The only reference I can find is that for some operations it/they must be removed........after disconnection of the battery.
The cables from the cylinder head/s don't appear on the normal wiring diagrams. I have also checked the engine management circuits and the engine control circuits with out finding them. They are possibly shown somewhere (such as the tail light circuit diagrams !!!!!!)
There are no pictures and no dedicated reference to an engine earth cable/s
    Sorry .......not much help !

If the battery earth is terminated to the body then the engine earth should be from the body somewhere, not the chassis. This is what LR did on the D2, although they ran the earth lead from the battery to the engine with a tab to connect to the body along the way. Just because an auto elect ran an earth strap on a D3 to the chassis and it worked doesn't mean that its the correct/best solution.

I'd be checking the voltage between the engine block/head and the battery earth terminal, and between the battery earth teminal and the body to find out if there's an earthing problem.

Sorry my mistake should read from engine to body.
Voltages have been checked, the fitting of a temporary earth has fixed it but I want to know where the earth strap should be so I can check it out for proper connection or see if in fact it is there

Talk about digging up an old post!

The earth strap runs from the off-side wheel arch (body) - to chassis - then to off-side engine mount. The off-side wheel has to come off, then remove the inner plastic guard - which will get you access to the body connection. The remaining two are best accessed from underneath with sump guard removed.

    Photo of the cable

These cables are starting to fail at the engine mount end - probably fatigue, and the mounting lug detaches.

When it fails, when you try to start the car - the dash will light up but there will be no noise from the starter motor.

    Cheers,
    Rob
