without wanting to give too much away, speak to the line guys, they can be a great help ( the blokes that do the pole repairs etc) after all they do things with old poles!
yes the burg sometimes can be a no mans land!

up here, I asked the same question a couple of years ago, my extension cord, goes via two poles from my shed down to the back of the property, about 3/4 km to my pump house. One pole is a bit ordinary, I spoke to the 'right' line guy and he told me that I could buy a ' second grade' pole for $120 from the Boral timber place in Casino, i know thats a bit far from you. But the price was right. Some years ago country energy, wrote off any poles that came after the meter box, in that they became the property of the landholder.
However since country energy have embarked on a large scale, repair operation in this area, I am geting a new one for nix!( it was delivered last week and wil be installed on wednesday) there reasoning is that anything connected to the main lines have the potential to cause problems, and being the reciever of dirty power in my street, they are doing their best to get everything up to spec.

hope some of the suggestion helps.
