300 Landies to be Crushed in Qld.

    G'day Folks

It has come to my attention that 300+ Series Landrovers are to be Crushed they are part of a Landrover wreckers stock at Capella, the owners have died, and the daughter has the job of cleaning up the property. if you want further details PM to Rob Hay will get you the info and the lady's Phone No. some of these vehicles are complete.

There are Series 1.2.2a.3 vehicles I have been told.

    cheers

It reminds me of seeing around half that number of series vehicles on the dock here in Melb in the 70's when I drove taxi's. I happened to pick up a crew member and drop him back to the same ship that night. He said they all were destined for Nauru as they are the only vehicle to last in the corrosive atmosphere there. I asked why secondhand, and what he said made me shudder. The natives get gassed up and drive them into the sea !!!
A car dealer here put the deal together.. It stands to reason these shipments were regular.

That problem was solved in the late 80's when 2nd hand landrovers exported to Nauru started having their reverse gears removed and steering arms fixed so that they couldn't turn left. Works well given the circumference of Nauru and the landrover's turning circle.

Ferrous scrap, according to my wrecking yard friends, is fetching around $160 per tonne. This is why scrap vehicles from yards, farms, and stations all around the country are being cxrushed and exported. Just pick em up, put em in the crusher and off to the Chinese blast furnaces and you get a nice cheque. If restorers/repairers want to keep these vehicles then be prepared to pay a premium over scra price.
