Well I have always used Ryco but given the recent thread you mention and the search I just did I decided to see what some of the bigger players had to offer.
This is what I came up with after searching the net this morning.
This is all for my MY95 V8 Disco.

The 3.9 V8 oil pressure is rated at 2.75bar/40psi @ 2500rpm at running temp.
I read this from http://www.theautochannel.com/e_about/filters.html in order to understand the Bypass Valve (BPV).
Does this all mean that if the difference in pressure from one side of the filter to the other is greater than the BPV setting then it will open the valve?Relief (By-Pass) Valve. In a full flow system, all the oil passes through the filter to reach the engine. If the filter clogs, an alternative route to the engine must be provided for the oil, or the bearings and other internal parts may fail, due to oil starvation. A relief, or by-pass, valve is used to allow unfiltered oil to lubricate the engine. Unfiltered oil is far better than no oil at all. This relief (by-pass) valve is built into the engine block in some cars. Otherwise, the relief (by-pass) valve is a component of the oil filter itself. Under normal conditions, the valve remains closed. When there is sufficient contaminant in the oil filter to reach a preset level of pressure differential to oil flow (around 10-12 PSI in most passenger cars), pressure differential on the relief (by-pass) valve caused it to open. This condition can occur when the oil filter has become clogged or when the weather is cold and the oil is thick and flows slowly.
Another interesting note is that if you only use the parts catalogue search on the manufacturers websites you will not get the full story. As if you look for Z89A replacements on the Fleetguard site you will only get the higher BPV rated filters and not the correct lower BPV filter (correct according to other sources). I used Z89A as if you search for ERR3340 you get even less info.
Before it is said why not just use genuine, the reason I don't want to use genuine is they only sell parts at Newstead in Brisbane and that is way to far for me to go since I would drive past countless other filter suppliers on the way as I live on the Southside.
I don't know what the better filter brands are but I know we have always used Fleetguard on everything (generators to semi trailers) at previous workplaces so I figure they must be up there.
Does this help Ken?![]()
For the County I use Castrol RX Super, Oil filter usually Baldwin, fuel filter usually Japan Element or Isuzu, air usually Donaldson, sometimes Fleetguard. But depends what the local filter specialist can get, and varies a bit.
2a, Castrol 20w-50, Ryco or Baldwin or Fleetguard filter, depending on what he has.

I still don't see why people think you need a anti-drain back valve on the filter. On the TDIs at least, the filter is mounted near enough to vertical and screwed on with the inlet/outlet end pointing north. The filter will always be full. The last ERR3340 I bought had no anti drain back valve.
As I mentioned elsewhere, if the filter mounted at the top of the system and screwed on with the inlet/outlet end pointing south (such as the Kubota hydraulic system), then it is advisable to have an anti-drain back valve.
300tdi i use genuine Filters or Cooper Filter
Oil
Penrite Diesel, what ever the numbers are...
Air filters, Genuine, Fuel Genuine
If you way it up over a lifetime you might pay $1000 extra for genuine, but what is a Motor rebuild worth??
you might only get 100,000km more out of your engine with genuine... but thats alot of motoring...
TD5,
Mobil 1 5-50 engine oil
All filters are genuine.
Cheers

Oil: Caltex Delo 400, because I can't afford Mobil Delvac 1
Oil Filter: Baldwin B74, plus I also use a bypass filter to filter down to 1 micron
Fuel Filter: Baldwin BF-587D, Fleetguard FF-5135, (Although I have now switched to a CAV style filter so I can see any rubbish collected in the glass bowl, filter element is smaller, so I will just change more frequently)
Air Filter: Genuine ESR 1445. Have tried Fleetguard AF-25599, but I like the genuine oil impregnated paper much better, you need to change more often but I think it catches everything. Price between OE and Fleetguard was near the same too!

PM ME FOR WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR
Don't worry. Even in Brisbane I am miles from a genuine LR parts store.
The only dealer in Brisbane that stocks parts is in Newstead on the Northside like I mentioned above.
I don't know if they will send parts to the Southside dealers (I assume they do for servicing). They certainly didn't offer to when I tried to get parts from their Southside dealer.
So genuine LR parts are about a 35min drive for me (if no traffic). Although I am surrounded by aftermarket suppliers.
