    Leaking Rear Window

    Anyone with a FL1 Hippo will know of the design problem of the rear window/door in that it leaks in the rain when parked.

    Mine is no different but doesn't leak all the time but when it does it fills the tool box hole. I have checked mine and the rubber seal does seal against the window so I am at a loss to know where the water comes in.

    Does it leak through the seal on the window or does the door fill up and overflow inside? I have researched overseas sites and there are plenty references to the issue but nothing on what is the actual cause.

    PS - not after thoughts - just facts - give me the facts

    If you want facts you've come to the wrong place. I can give reasons why water gets into the Disco rear door - they may apply to the Freebie.

    Things like this for the Freebie (these are Freebie TSBs):

    PROBLEM:
    WATER INGRESS INTO REAR FOOTWELL - REAR PASSENGER DOOR
    · Wet floor carpet adjacent to either rear passenger door.
    · Wet rear passenger door casing lower edge.
    · water running down door casing

    or this:

    PROBLEM:
    WATER INGRESS INTO LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT - TAILDOOR SEAL
    Wet carpet in luggage compartment or condensation in security box.
    CAUSE:

    Water leaking between taildoor seal and mating surfaces.

    or this:
    WATER INGRESS INTO LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT - TAILDOOR VARIOUS
    Wet boot carpet or condensation in security box.
    CAUSE:

    Either or both of the following:
    · Inner door panel lower fixings (lokuts) are not sealed, this can allow water to
    pass via door cavity and enter vehicle interior.
    · Water leaking past poorly sealed water shedder.
    or this:


    PROBLEM:
    WATER INGRESS - REAR OF HEADLINING WET
    Water enters roof rear header section causing
    wet headlining at rear of vehicle.
    CAUSE:

    Water passing through plastic lokuts in body
    outer header section, see photo.
    But you want facts, not ideas so I can't help.

    Hmmm - I thought this was the new Freelander section not the Disco section
    You know where the Landrover lepers live

    The Freelander rear door is unique in that the glass is not fixed and goes up and down unlike other newer Landrover models. As I said this is a Landie design issue not a defect in the rubbers or other area of the door.

    Ihave had the problem and fixed it.

    The plastic trim that the door glass slides into at the top is held in place by a steel rail that is screwed in. It rusts and lets water into the roof, which subsequently runs down the inside of hte trim and pools in the floor. Freelander carpet liner is thick, and hides the water.

    Replace the rail, and seal it with some 1/2" square foam from clark rubber, and she lasts forever. If you want more info, let me know. I found the TSBs not to suit my problem real well.

    We have a 1999 diesel 5 door freelander and the boot was filling up with water whenever it rained. Not only was the boot filling up with water, the carpet was wet as well.

    I pulled the vinyl panels out of the boot then took the carpet out and let it dry for a few days. Underneath the carpet it had started to rust from being damp all the time, so I cleaned all the rust off and treated the metal with rust treatment.

    I then used a hose to find where the water was coming in (on our freelander it was just above where the metal part of the door closes against the body of the car). At first I thought it was the seal, but after looking closely the seal was in good condition (and also a new seal is expensive!). I pulled the seal off (be very careful if you do, as removing the seal requires that the three trim panels be removed, and the plastic clips holding them in break very easily, as I found out the hard way!). Then I used some black sealastic (auto grade) to run along the whole length of the metal where the seal goes. Then I put the seal back on the hippo (freelander!) and ran a bead of sealastic round the outside of the seal smoothing it with a rag/finger dipped in turps.

    After the sealastic dried, I tested the seal with a high-pressure hose and it didn’t leak a drop! Then it was just a case of putting everything back together.

    I did that two years ago and so far there’s been no water leaking in. Also it’s very hard to see that anything has been done to the seal as the black sealastic blends in well.
