    S1 Wiper motor

    I took off the wiper motor today during the course of my stripping parts, I decided to try and get it going, I pulled the covers off all the drive gears are fine but the grease is stiff and well due to be upgraded, on the electrical side the armature is nice the brushes have plenty on them , for all intensive purposes it should work, I tried to hot wire it of my jump starter pack but it seems dead, the motor is a genuine Lucas, it has on the back 2 chrome whatchamacallits, one clicks into the other, I am guessing this is the switching set up, seems complicated to first release by pulling back and twisting allowing the other to click on, or is this not the case, it has a terminal block on the side with a power and an earth wire. I remember my old S2a just had a simple twist swith on the back of the motor.

    I have been painting some of the smaller parts so they can be wrapped up and forgotten until later, I found a really nice Semi Gloss black enamel spray made by Plastikote in the USA, available through some of the bigger hardware chains, its a really nice and hard finish, might be of use to someone

    The switch on the back of my wiper motor case seems to be just a two position knob - I don't think there is any pulling required. However it's been damaged in the past and the wiper is now controlled from a switch on the dash, the wiring goes direct to the terminal blocks you described. Sorry this is not very helpful.

    You mean you have a wiper Andy? Thats a luxury on a Series 1 isnt it?

    I still want one but Im not allowed yet

    It must be, its only got one, old wobbly style blade, realy effective I gather

    Hello Graceysdad,sorry i didnt get back to you on this,you pull that chrome arm back and turn it,it should lock into position and then turn the other switch on wiper should work.they are designed so that it can also be worked manually.they are an interesting motor to rebuild as they run very close tolerances to the outer case if they touch they stop working.aftermarket ones are available that have self parking feature and are more reliable than the Lucas one.i have these on the shelf if needed.cheers Justin.

    I've been ripped off - no chrome arm on mine! It must be non-original.

    Most Series 1's & early S2's only had one wiper, the other was an EXTRA and was an extra cost item like a heater, as most commercial vehicles only had one wiper 2 became mandatery after about 1955/6 I think.

    I think it was a bit later than that depending on where you were. I know I had to fit a second wiper to my 1961 2a in 1966 when I transferred it from the NT to NSW.

    Thanks Justin, regarding the new one there is a jap unit available through most marine chandlers that would interchange ok, mine should work, its not damaged in anyway, just the old lubricating grease has gone hard and crusty, be mad to not flush it out and re grease with new stuff, now I know how it works will try again tomorrow, if its clapped we will think about a new one, and u can have this old one, if I cant get it going.
