    TD5 Turbo to 300Tdi

For the technocrats out there :

Can a TD5 Turbo be easily adapted to a 300Tdi?
    What would need modifying?

What kind of performance enhancements or limitations might be expected?

    Thanks

The turbo housing in the 300Tdi is integral with the exhaust manifold for starters. And since the Tdi produces max boost from around 2300rpm, you wont achieve any benefits above this RPM (once max boost pressure is reached, excess pressure is dumped out the wastegate). I think the variable vane turbo from the HS2.8Tdi engine can be purchased with manifold (at least there was a guy selling these around 6months ago) and I assume that would generate max boost lower in the rev range (spin up faster) with the associated improvement.

I believe there were other aftermarket turbos that could be bolted up to the 300TDi - Ritters here in Melbourne were doing it as part of their 300TDi power boost "kit" - not sure if they still are.

not the Td5 turbo but this crowd offer a performance improvement using a mitsubishi turbo to get you 101 kw instead of the 83 from the Tdi with Garrett turbo

I wonder how much more boost they're running and at what point they get the 15psi that the original ran.

I think the TD5 turbo would offer an improvement, mainly in the upper rev range. Simply because it's a later generation turbo (GT2052S instead of T2/T25) with more refined compressor wheels.
But manifolds will be an issue. I think the variable vane off the 2.8 would be best, someone in the UK was also doing the upgrade kit.

There's a TD5 Turbo on ebay starting at $20 which is what prompted all this conjecture.

If I was going to pay real money, I think I'd be going for the 2.8HS too.

You can pretty much make anything fit anything with an angle grinder, a welder and a damn big hammer but I dont think it would be easy as it would take a lot of cutting and welding of the cast TD5 mainifold to mate it to a TDI manifold so that the td5 turbo could be fitted.

I would be interested in how it went though if anyone happens to do it

I recently saw a 300tdi Disco set up where the waste gate pressure pipe had been removed from the turbo outlet and re tapped into the inlet manifold plenum chamber.
The theory was that any pressure drop would be compensated, and the full 1atm. boost would be at the cyl. head inlet.
I dont know of the result however. Perhaps some comment on the potential of this, it would be a very simple mod.

Exactly the same as cranking the boost up a psi or two.
