    Replacement Gearbox

What is a reasonable gearbox to replace the standard gearbox in a 88 2litre. I drove a series 1 for nearly 10 years as my everyday vehicle - including in Sydney so I know how to drive them just I am a lot older and lazier these days.

I was thinking of synchro series 3 box - yes I know they are weak in some areas but I never had an issue in 5 years day to day use in my series 3. And the series i will still have the 2 litre and will not be doing any heavy towing.

Will the box bolt on - I assume not due to the bolt pattern - will a series 1 bell housing bolt onto a series 3 box and allow the box to mate to the engine.

Anyother gear box options like - putting series 3 internals into a series 1 box or a completely different box.

    Thanks

Moss box out of the Jaguar, along with the V12
BTW, did you read the post about the guy crossing half Australia in a Daimer Double Six, mostly OFF Road?

Actually I have a spare V12 with BW auto in the backyard - have considered putting that in a series 1

The guy with the Daimler must be rich to be able to drive that far in a V12 at todays petrol prices.

You may be pleasantly surprised, the S3 gearbox on a 2 litre engine should not be a problem, there will be a little bit of mucking around, however I believe that it is possible.

The 2 litre in the S1 88 is esentially the same flywheel housing as the 6 cyl Rover in the late S2a and 3.

Now you have a couple of options, you can either change to the hydraulic clutch arrangement from the S3 with the pendant type clutch pedal (and while you are at it get rid of the other hole in the floor and put the pendant type brake pedal)

Your other option is to leave the S1 mechanical clutch levers and shafts. In this case you will have replace the S3 bellhousing on the front of the S3 gearbox, with a bellhousing and clutch throw out from a late series 2a 6 cylinder gearbox. Everything else will bolt up in the same manner.

If you like I will check S3/2a 6 cyl bellhousings on a 2 litre engine on the weekend.

    Cheers

G'day All, I would be considering a Series 2A box or the Series 3 whichever you have, change the bell housing on the G/box to suit your engine, I just recently put a Series 3 box onto a S2A housing + clutch mechanism, it all went together with no problems at all, cheers Dennis

I should have mentioned this in my first post - the S1 box and bell-housing has a small bearing on the front of the layshaft, it would be better to stay with the larger layshaft bearing which means a later suffix series 2a bellhousing.

I'm not sure if Dennis was suggesting that the gearbox internals from the S3 box will fit into the S2a case. However the S2a bellhousing will definately fit onto the S3 case. I have this combination on my S2B.

    Cheers

    Thanks Diana,

I would prefer to leave the clutch arrangement as it is, so the car remains as original as possible. I do have a spare series 1 box (in addition to the original series 1 box) - I take it from your comments that the front and bellhousing off the series 1 box will not go on the series 3 box.

    Cheers
