    Holden Conversion.

Can a Holden 6 that is currently bolted to a Series 2 (not 2A) gearbox be transfered to a Series 3 gearbox without changing the adaptor plate?

Yes - provided that you have both 2 1/4 litre gearbox bellhousings. Or a 2 litre 4 cyl in the S2 and 2.6 litre 6 cyl in the S3.

There are two bell housing patterns used in Series Landrovers - one is common (with minor variants) to the 1.6, 2 and 2.6 IOE engines (and I think the V8?), the other to the 2.25 petrol and diesel. Doesn't matter what Series it is,, just the engine type. Where you can have a problem is if the Series 2 is a 2.25 and the Series 3 is a six originally. Note that the Series 3 and the Series 1/2/2a have different actual bell housings to suit the different clutch mechanism, although this does not affect the engine adaptor.

And, if it is not one of the hot rod Holden sixes, she will be slow.

The 186S can rev, but the rest of the stock Holden sixes, only rev to about 3,300 or 3,500 RPM.
Compare that to the Landy at 4,250 RPM and you get a slow vehicle.
You will lose 20 to 25 percent of top speed. They do have the power and torque that the little 4 doesn't though.
I have only been in one hot rod Holden powered Landy.
Very frightening, for a short wheel base S2, to be able to pull over ninety miles per hour in third gear.

    Or impressive.

Do it it's cheaper than a Landy engine rebuild.

Hi all - In the dim dark ages I had an adapter made to suit the Holden 253 V8 to the Land Rover gearbox. I also needed to swap the diffs for the Rover car 4.3 ratio type.

The big problem I encountered was that in my original 6 cyl chassis the width of the V8 block was too wide for the recess in the firewall. You need to widen the recess a couple of inches. The next problem is the rear spark plugs need to be accessed from within the cab through holes in the firewall, these need rubber gromets.

If you want more grunt why not consider a 6 cyl 269 Chev. These were fitted to some of the Bedford trucks and Chev pickups. They look like a Holden red engine on steriods with taller side plates.

Either that or a Ford Falcon 250 6cyl.

G'day All, I think you missed the point Diana,, he asked will the red 253 engine fit the holden adaptor plate the answer in the short term is NO!!. I have made adaptor plates for 6cyl holden, ford 302 V8 and Diahatsu diesel to fit series Land Rovers, so I suppose maybe with some real ingenuity and a bloody good wksp you might be able to make anything fit anything, cheers Dennis
