    Good Donor For Diesel Conversion???

Who has experience with the Nissan TD27 Engine?

I had to service one recently, and it (in a Terrano) came along on the trip from Bris-Perth. I must say I have become quite impressed with this little engine...

Some specs (as fitted to Terrano 1):
    99 BhP (73 KW) @ 4000 rpm
    159 lb/ft (215 N.m) @ 2000 rpm
    8psi Boost std.

TIMING GEARS (like the venerable 4BD1 - this impressed me most of all)

Appears to have a Bosch VE injector pump...

I believe the engine is indirect injection, but the glow plugs stay on for 1 second at best, and it starts without accelerator. I think there is a later version of the TD27 that is direct injection and has more power/torque (can anyone confirm?).

This engine is fitted to Nissan Cabstar trucks, among others.

Power and torque seems only slightly down on a 300Tdi, and there certainly seems to be room for tweaking. This one had 300000km on the clock, but still ran like new and didn't use any oil in 6000km (wish I could say the same for my 2.25D).

Economy was around 9L/100km on the trip - in an AUTO! - where the 2.25D was using closer to 11.

    Hi Ben,

Are you thinking of doing something with your IIA? I thought you'd finally gotten used to the noise and the smell

rofl - used to it, but wouldn't mind a bit more power/gearing for when I make it look more like a forest rover

The interesting thing I have found over here though, is the IIA goes MUCH better in the sand than the County. I will have to swap tyres and try again, but I think all the weight of the ISUZU makes the 110 dig in easier when in the soft stuff. Before the trip, I had worried that the IIA on 33x11s would just die in the sand - but no... So I am thinking there is something to be said for a lighter engine... But the jury is still out.

Ben I have a series III 3 with the 2.25 Diesel (or I will have when I rebuild the engine) and I spotted a 2.5 5cyl Mercedes Diesel engine, low klms out of a 190D sedan, mechanical fuel injection, 77Kws, I thought it would be a sweet engine in the seriesIII, compact, no computer and not enough Torque or power to harm the rest of the SeriesIII, under $2K, Regards Frank.

These blokes do a few for the Nissan 6 amongst others. There was also a hybrid 110 on eBay with a Nissan 6/cabstar box conversion - seemed a nice fit.

Hi Frank, not a huge fan of merc diesels, and I will be replacing the whole driveline (box and T-case) when I eventually do it, to get lower gearing (49:1 is barely low enough atm).

Ben, the TD27 is generally reckoned to be a goodun. Talking to an engine reconditioner here in NZ, he said the only engine they never really see in are the TD27s. I was keen on one some years back after I found out that Marks 4wd adaptors had done a kit to fit these & a Nissan 5 speed to a series Xfer box. Enquiries got me no where, they no longer did them & seemed reluctant to tell me what box they used, but I reckon it would be the one from the light trucks that run this setup. gear shift straight out of the top of the box & no housing out the back to get in the way of an adaptor. I've not been able to find out whether or not the later ones have direct injection or not. I've seen mention of them putting out about 125 hp in IC form in Terrano 2s but AKAIK this uses electronically controlled injection in much the same way as the later 300 TDis did. I'm thinking in terms of something like this to replace a V8 & auto box in a Disco with something like this. The Nissan box is reputed to be very strong, more so than a LT&& or R380 & also have decent ratios. Hope thats given you something to think on, I must get A into G & track some more info down myself.
    Steve.

I was looking at putting a 4JB1-T (2.8lt Turbo Diesel, seen in the Holden Rodeo and Isuzu Mu ) into my Series 3. they are a briliant motor great fuel economy and very good at low revs and Bloody reliable !

I have a navara dual cab with a 2.7d that has a turbo off a turano import. The conversion was done by the previous mechanic owner. He had it on the dyno and it's putting out 110bhp at the rear wheels. Not sure how much boost it has but it goes alright. It has cancer so I've been toying with the idea of putting the motor in my 82 rrc. I did think about putting it in my 76rrc for doing comps but I really like the sound and grunt of my 4.6L. I'm getting about 12L/100km mainly town work with a bit of gear in the back.
