Import into AUS from UK

Seeing as I'm over in the UK, who have imported Land Rovers from the UK? What company did you use? How much did it cost? And what are your views on the service provided?

This is right off the track - your location is listed as Sydney.

There are 2 locations in the world with that spelling.

One is in Canada and the other in Australia.

Which part of the UK are you in?

Back on track, unless you have owned a vehicle and had it available for your use outside of Australia for a minimum of 12 months the duties on the import are hideously expensive.

I know a person who used Dunsfold's to dispatch complete vehicles to Oz and others in who used P.A. Blanchard's to dispatch to the U.S. Otherwise I'm no help.

There are 3 or 4 people on here who have done it, of which I am one.

I brought my D90 out late last year...

here is what I posted in an earlier post (sorry to anyone who is bored of reading it already!)


The first and most important think you must do prior to even thinking about importing a car is to contact the DOTARS department in Australia.

You must get permission from them to be able to import a vehicle. To get this you must be able to prove you have had adn used it for the last 12 months in the UK

Otherwise it can be returned, and / or you can get a huge fine.

This can take a long time. It took 3 weeks longer to get this for mine than it did to get my visa.

It is only about 50 dollars to apply.

Once you have this you can start setting up everything else

In the letter you get back from Dotars you will get a number of documents which you will need.

Next thing to do is find a shippers, and clean the car.

Guy there, Richard is fantastic. Can’t speak highly enough of their service. Car arrived here with everything intact and exactly as I left it. You can also pack stuff in the car with them and you get a sole use container. Cost was 1290 pounds plus 200 pounds insurance.

Once the car has sailed you will get a container tracking number which you can trace car with.

5/6 weeks later it will arrive.

Once it arrives, is where the fun starts! I would personally recommend using a customs clearance agent at the port to sort out the clearances and so on, unless you have a lot of time spare. (I know Reads90 did it all) but I couldn’t get about that easily so paid them to do it – not that expensive for their services.

They will arrange everything from cleaning, unpacking, moving it off the docks to a bonded warehouse etc etc…

You will then have to go to the customs clearance companies office when its all clear and pay the duty and fees. They will then tell you where the car is!

This will be:
10% import duty
10% gst
And fees.

Total fees and duties for this for mine were approx $5500 dollars

The customs value was very low really (less than I specified) Do not put a low value on the car – its not worth the risk. I put 14000 pounds on it and they valued it at 14500 dollars! (about 5000 pounds!)

I repeat don’t put a low value on it!! let them do that if they want

Once you pay them, they will send the money online to customs and print you out a clearance receipt. They also let you know which warehouse it is in.

You then need to go to the warehouse with all the paperwork, and pick it up (it wont be on the docks)

Ideally take a truck or trailer – not worth the risk of driving it

Next, Get hold of an inspector. I know a good one in Brisbane (The same one Reads90 used) who will check it meets ADR’s and engineer any mods for you…

I had loads, 2 winches, rollcage etc etc..

With regard to the ADR’s it needs to have, Headrests, glass with as1/as2 on it, correct colour left dipping lights, approved seatbelts - ADR 4 and child restraint anchors.

My 90 had everything standard, except the anchors but Mines only 2 seats so it didn’t matter.

This cost $500

Next he will engrave and fit a plate (modification plate – blue) on the bulkhead, and give you an engineering certificate.

He will also fill in one of the forms from Dotars, and you need to send that off to Niddrie name plates for the second identification plate (sticker)

Next book a roadworthy (Like an MOT but easier)

I got a mobile one to come out and do mine.

Next you need to get CTP (third party) insurance, and this has to start on the day that you want to take it to Qld, NSW etc etc transport

Get there early with all the paperwork you have. I mean everything including your passport and something with your proof of address in Australia (so they can make you an account)

Have some money ready too because they will come out and inspect it (engine ./ chassis numbers etc) then go back inside, input the details from the forms you have filled in, and give you a bill of about $1200 (different in other states). this is for refgistration and so on.

They will then give you number plates.

Then drive your car. About a week later the registration sticker (tax) will arrive.

Things have changed a bit since I did it 20 years ago!

Only things I'd add are

- have everything ready for the length of UK ownership. Ownership = usage. When I applied Customs deducted all my travel around Europe;

- I got a certificate of permanent export from DVLC in Swansea;

- I would now photograph the car all over before loading for later insurance claims. It makes arguing about whether a dent or scrape was pre-existing or not that much easier.

As per Tuskers post, make sure you photograph it everywhere after you clean and before you put it in the container. Will be a great help if you have any arguments this end.
