Snowy Mountains Info.

Hi guys Just hoping to get some help with our itinerary as we really want to get the most out of our time around the Snowy Mountains. We are going to be in Tumut and stay there on Sunday the 16th of March and need to be in Cooma on Friday the 21st. We would really appreciate any help with things to do and " must see places" and also the most scenic way down.

The wife and I were up there for New Years, and some of the scenery is fantastic, we mostly stayed around jindabyne and due to time didn't get to see the west of the range which is great apparently. We then came down the Barry Way into Vic, which follows the snowy, abosolutely gorgeous scenery, about halfway down there is a campsite called pinch river and on a warm day is awesome for a swim.

The only thing to put a dampener on the trip, was the $16 a day entry into the park. I don't mind paying for parks but thats a bit rich.

Tumut has a visitors centre. From memory it's just near the swiming pool. It should have lots of info.

From Tumut you can do nice day trips to the various hydro power stations, Tumuts trout farm, Yarangobilly caves, Cabramurra or just go fishing in the Dams.

Off road wise, there's some nice tracks though the forests to the west of the dams.... just watch out for the occasional logging truck.....



btw, the nights are getting cold up that way already.....

On the map above you will notice a small dam - Tantangara

Up the back of the dam you will find some extraordinary scenery and best of all - wild brumbies. Camping on the lake-edge can offer great fishing, serenity and peace.

A great place. Take the time to explore.

If you go in the back way - off the Tumut to Kiandra Road - you can camp on the "headwaters' of the Murrumbidgee - one of my favorite autumn camping spots.

Slip over to Adelong and have a wander through the old gold mine workings. Well worth the visit.

My parents used to have the Dry Cleaners at Tumut and I went there regularly on holidays, though didn't have access to 4WD. Plenty to see & do around there. Great fishing on the dams, or even just in the river down behind the race course in town.

Another good drive is down through Batlow & Tumbarumba to Jingellick and then follow the road on the NSW side of the Murray to Albury. Make sure you check out the Dora Dora pub - it's unique.

Don't know what it's like now, but the front bar of the Woolpack was a great place to meet a few locals and get some good info.

Make sure you stay in Kiandra a while and do the heritage walk there.,

You want a drive to remember, take the drive from Cooryong to Cabramurra or vice versa BUT NOT WHEN THERE IS SNOW. Spectacular is the only word for it.

Coming back from the VIC show we stayed the night at Jingellic along the banks of the Murray and next morning drove the beute road up Tumbarumba / Batlow and into Tumut - great run.

Don't know what it's like now, but the front bar of the Woolpack was a great place to meet a few locals and get some good info.

Bugger must have drop past that late on Sunday night along River Road into Jingellic.
