S2a gearbox swap SIII

Gday All
I have just bought a S2a LWB ($100) for the gearbox and free wheeling hubs and bits and pieces. It has the red six in it with the conversion bell housing. I know I will have to change the bell housing but will it drop straight into the SIII SWB with out to much hassle? Free wheeling hubs maybe different spline so wont know until pull apart. Any help would be great.

The gearboxes are a straight swap with the following provisos:-

Clutch arrangement is different - either swap bell housing etc or swap clutch mechanism along with the gearbox.

Six cylinder and four cylinder bell housings are different.

I think you can swap the S2a and S3 bell housings, but there may be some issues - maybe someone else can confirm this.

The ratios, mounts, dimensions etc are all the same between the boxes apart from the above. I assume you are aware that the S2a box only has synchromesh on third and fourth, but is generally considered to be more robust than the S3 box.

As you say, there may be a spline number problem with the S3, but the SWB only changes to 24 spline late in production, so there may not be a problem unless it is a late one (or unless either vehicle has had the front axle swapped!)

The six cylinder is a Holden red (Forgot to say that) so I will have to swap the housings over.

With regards to the fwb's I'm not sure if it has had axle swap or not so when S2a arives it will be luck of the draw

What John says -

• you can leave the engine gearbox combination and just swap the hydraulics line for the clutch.
• You can put an SIII bellhousing on a late SIIa (without checking it is from gearbox suffix "C" or maybe suffix "D") the really late suffix boxes with the sealed pinion throwout are best)
• You can put a SIIa on a SIII box with the same suffix constraints - I have that on a 1968 SIIB F/C.
• The SIIa 109"s had 10 spline axles right up to 1971 with only the last ones with the Salisbury rear diffs having the 24 splines.

Thanks Diana, I pick up the SIIa Thursday, I will be stripping everything off it over a 2 day period then rest has to go for scrap as no where to keep it. Shame really as it is in pretty good shape. I think I will make room lol
