Hi
Just starting trip planning for a trip up to the Gulf for 5 weeks starting July. I'm sure many of you have been up that way. What are the places to see up there? We are allowing at least 3 weeks between Cairns and Katherine...so thats at least 2 weeks between Karumba and Borooloola. We are going to spend a day at Chillagoe caves and a couple of days at lawn Hill NP and do hope to get to as much of the Gulf coast as possible...and hopefully not just at the main towns. There are a few 'private tracks' to the coast on my Hema map that I hope to get permisiion to travel.
..its fantastic to have a trip like this to look forward to get throug a few months of 9-5.
thanks

did the savanha way a few years ago now. Nice trip but make sure you do it in the dry season and well in it. As we were a month after the wet season and half the track was under 1-2 foot of water and the rivers were fun to cross at times. So real barren land out there , more so near hells gate

When travelling through Burketown drop in to Escott Lodge. Its is about 15kms West of Burketown off the main drag (dirt road). The lodge is closed now but you can still access the road in with a couple of neat causeways for barra fishing. Look out for crocs though they are there even if you dont see them. There is also a little causeway on the way out to the boat ramp at Burketown that produces barra like you wouldnt believe round April.
There is a WW2 bomber crash site on old Doomadgee (mosquito creek). Might need to get permission from Doomadgee cultural group to get to that one though.
Gregory Down roadhouse is worth stopping at for a cold one, its at the turnoff to Lawn Hill anyway. The old girl behind the counter can be a bit snippy though. Lawn Hill is a must see.
There is a lot of Burke and Wills stuff through this areas as well if you do your research.
