What's this S3 worth?

Checked it out, looked tidy and well-restored.

Steering was very sloppy. Needs new windscreen (both sides).

Seems a bit expensive to me, but what would I know (being a toyota troopy owner and all!)?

Well, the description as advertised is a 2 door soft-top but the photo is a four door station wagon. Has it got a Safety Certificate? Probably not, if it has bad steering and damaged screens. No certificate, no reg. and it is worth less than $1000. The trade rule of thumb is that a certificate, registration, and obviously good enough tyres to get the Safety Certificate are worth $1000. Cars without are wreckers or "handyman specials".

Seems the camper set up has been well made and thought out. The panels do look qite straight. If the steering is sloppy it could do with a reco steering relay or similar. Not dear, about $120 or less. The 6 cyl motor was not well liked by many and is very thirsty.
If it has as you say new tyres, they alone have gotta be worth 6/700$. Combine that together with the rest of the body and the camper bit, I have to reckon 3500 to 4000 if registered.
New windscreens are not dear either, but if it's not rego..ed, I'd take off at least another 800 to a grand.
I usually then allow another coulpe of hundred for surprises.

All that said, If I was in the market for something like that, I would certainly consider it.
What was the gearbox like?

I just bought a series vehicle and I payed what most would say is too much. BUT there was practically no rust, it was maintained well by the last owner and it appeared to have no surprises and I still have not found anything that was not explained to me in detail.

So, considering it will go for many more years even if it was for arguments say 500 or 1 thousand to much the fact is over the next 15 years it runs for that money is jack all. And if it is rust free you'll always have a good body to work with.

$1000 based on the couple of hundred bucks worth of camping stuff in the back.

It is not a registered sale. That means any issues are yours to contend with on top of the 4k. I don't think so....

Registered and with a roadworthy it might be worth as much as $4000, but unless inspection showed it to be in practically perfect condition, I doubt it is worth more than $1500 without at least a roadworthy.

The sloppy steering is almost certainly simple and reasonably cheap to fix, as are the windscreens. But what is this telling you about the rest of it?

The young fella who's restored it seems very honest and genuine. It looked very tidy throughout, but alas, it won't be sold with rego. The only 2 things that I could see that would be needed is the steering and windscreen. He was upfront about the issues with the steering and screen, although why wouldn't he be considering you can't really hide it.

He also admitted poor fuel economy. His reason for sale is he's now moved on to restoring an old EK Holden, and doesn't get up the beach much anymore.

I'm still a bit interested. Naturally, I'd rather a diesel, but given I wouldn't be driving it much myself, I wouldn't be spending too much money on fuel for it. The big necessity for me is the ability to take a baby seat in the back. I'm also concerned that the lack of power steering might make it hard for the wife to drive if she has to.

Might offer him $2500, and find somebody who knows Land Rovers to eyeball it for me first.
