    Old sump oil ?

I am a mechanic by trade and have a defender TDI 300.
At work all the old sump oil is given to some waste crowd who take it away.
Most of the old is from LPG forklifts and the sump oil is reasoniblily clean as sump oil goes.
Can this be treated to be used as diesel fuel and if so at how much time and effort.
    Regards Ron

5 micron filter, or let is settle for a month and filter off the top.

50% diesel 40 % oil 8% kero 2 % petrol= russia mix, seemed to work ok, better than the railway diesel that thay pinch

It could be but not easily enough to be viable, Especially if you were thinking of putting it in something exotic like a TD5.

with the right stabalisers it might make a good light duty gearbox oil.

Find a copy of Landrover Owner International - February issue ( Yellow defender on the cover). They have a section on how to convert vegetable oil into biodiesel that's reasonably easy to follow. For sump oil it's virtually the same except you'd want it filtered beforehand and the temp at which it's the right viscosity is higher.

Racor Filters used to supply a range of filtration equipment popular amongst large fleets in the USA. This equipment was for filtering drained oils and mixing the filtered oil into the bulk distillate storage at a ratio determined by the user. Racor also made equipment incorporating filters and cyclonic water separators to constantly circulate and filter bulk fuel stores. I have their literature in my collection somewhere.

There is a great use for sump oil.
    Shed heating.
There are furnaces around that burn the used sump oil,no smoke heaps of heat,They work on a reservior of sump oil with a furnace above. Some of the heat produced is used to evaporate the oil off to burn in the furnace. They roar wicked on full chat and produce heaps of heat
