I have my sensor fitted to the sump of the auto and when driving really hard on soft sand i would be lucky to get it over 100 deg c I hope thats not the return line readings you're getting I would think thats pretty hot what oil are you running ?
I fitted a madman monitoring systems to my 300tdi auto ute last week and took it for a drive in the hills yesterday. I have hooked the oil temp sender in to the auto cooler lines when i was giving it a little bit of stick up the hills i notice the engine temp got about 110C - 115C and the auto temp was at around 140C - 146C i would hate to think what temp the auto would get to if it were a 40 deg day and i was towing a caravan.
What temps should the auto get too? engine temp i am not worried about as it peaked a few time but due to the location of the sender (in the top bleed screw) i can understand why it would fluctuate. If this is the case and the auto see temps that high then i will have to get a new sender this one only reads to 150

so, when you didn't have the temp gauge, were you worried about what the temp was?
so what's changed.
i find this problem with aircraft owners, as soon as we fit an engine monitoring system the owner has more problems we are invited to fix - when there is really nothing wrong at all - fit more gauges, we make more money chasing faults that are not there on a standard installation.
Problem with Auto's running thru the radiator as cooling....
The Radiator PRE HEATS the oil on the Tranny.... and the Tranny then makes the car run hotter....
If you run just a tranny cooler and a good big one, then you will find the temp drop....
It sounds very hot to me.
140-146C works out to 284-295F
The temps and distances in this chart are Farenheight and miles.

so would the auto sump be the best spot to place the sensor?

I am running the right oil for the auto.
I replaced the std sender switch with the new one so it's on the 'from the auto line' so i would be hotter then on the other side of the cooler i am going to fit a t piece so i can run both senders at the same time and see if the std sender switch faults.
as far as monitoring i agree but I like to look at the numbers it's fun... and way more interesting then the road :P
If your reading the supply line to the cooler your reading the oil temp as it comes out of the torque converter in most cases IMHO the best place is in the sump up the front behind the bellhousing or down the back where its out of the line of fire of everything and in theory nice and safe.

Hey, here are some words linked to from the Ashcroft website. Some very interesting reading and comment on temps in the pan and also from the torque converter.
