    remote central locking

    Hi All,

I have found with my 07 Fender that the range for the remote central locking is very poor. I have be forward of the B pillars and within 2 meters for it to activate. I have tried both remotes. My previous Fender did not have a remote so I can not compare it. Other vehicles I drive, with work I drive a lot of hire cars, work up to 10 meters.

    Remote central locking

Don't get me started on the pathetic remote sensors. I usually have to stand right next to the passenger window to activate mine. It doesn't matter if there is any interference around or not, it simply does not have any range. On my wife's car I can unlock / lock if from the house, while it is in the garage. Have reported it for every service, and I get the same reply. Works fine for us - from across the garage (10m). I know they are lying, but it is not worth the fight. I'm not sure, but it might be a Lucas electrics alarm.

Sounds the same as mine - won't work from behind the car.

I'mm not even sure where the sensor is.

Mine's the same - really poor range and sometimes you would swear that the battery was flat.

My last two Defenders (both 02MY - I got the tags after I bought the vehicles since the central locking guts were already in them) were MUCH better. I could stand several metres away and it would work fine. I used to be able to hit the button in my pocket as I was walking towards it or away and have it unlock or lock fine, but not any more.

I queried this at the dealers back in February and they tested it and said it's "just like that". That answer suggests they didn't really test it if you ask me.

Mine is the same - although sometimes it works from a distance, but generally not.

I find (and this is one for Mythbusters) that remote central locking devices work better when you hold them up next to your head. And it's got nothing to do with the simple elevation of the device. I have done tests at the same height both next to and away from my head and they always work better next to your head.

Anyone know of the real reason for this?

It is because you act as an aerial for your transmitter.

Not really sure of the construction of the Fenda remote but if it is like the Disco II key fob where the key is integrated into the remote then it will be even more effective if you touch the key to your body as you push the lock/unlock button.

I can easily triple the range of my key remote by just touching the metal key to my chin when operating the remote ie can operate the locks from about 25 - 30 meters away.
