    Oddities, rarities and the new banner

    Great new banner! Especially the Cuthbertson.
    It got me thinking, though (OK, that and the article on the Aussie Tickford in LRE) - are there any more Tickford wagons around? What about S1 Cuthbertsons? Or genuine 80" welders? Or factory 4x2s? Rolls-Royce powered 81"s? I could also ask about fire trucks, especially 80"s and 86"s (I've already seen ellard's 107" - nice!).
    Just curious. I'm sure I'm not the only one, though.

    Yes, be interesting to know if there were any of these very rare examples about. There could be the odd Tickford, although the body is pretty non-durable, and I'd be surprised if any were actually sold here. But they are the type of vehicle someone might have brought in when emigrating for example.

    I believe one or two 81s were in Australia either for assessment or with the British bomb tests, but would be surprised if any had remained here.

    4x2s were, I believe, only supplied to the Dutch and British military, and most were converted to 4x4 when they were sold to civilians, so it would be most surprising if any had found their way here in original form, although it is possible.

    Welder-could be a few, but local conversions were probably easier and cheaper, especially after local assembly started.

    Fire engines - there may be a few 80 and 86s about; there never were very many made, but fire engines tend to have a long life in a lot of cases, so preservation is more likely than the other rarities.

    I have heard of at least on 80' fire engine in australia, ex SMHES. There are a number elsewhere in the world.

    I've not heard of any welders at all.

    never heard of a 4x2 in aus, they are rare as hens teeth anyway.

    there is still at least one s1 cuthbertson in existance, but that is in the UK.

    One rolls roys powered 81" was trialed in australia by the army, but as far as we know it was returned to the UK after the trial.

    Thanks for the compliment on my 109 - as for 80" Fire engines there was quite a few but but not a lot remaining. I only know of two one in QLD (see attached link) but its missing the pump (unsure of owners)

    There was a number of Tickfords sold to the snowy, there are a number of pics about that show some of them, I know of at least one to be restored. Not sure how many 80" welders sold but I know of at least 3 at present.
    As for the 81" I have spoken to a Gentleman that swears that his family had one in the 60's he is not a Land Rover person but can describe it very well has promised me a look at some pics one day.

    While we were at Cooma for the 60 we had a look around the Snowy Hydro visitors section - there were several pictures displayed with Land Rover Tickford pictured withinn......

    The Cuthbertson was a kit that attached to a vehicle rather than a specific vehicle. I believe that someone whom the people on REMLR know quite well has a kit, or at least lots of a kit. Jaguar Rover Australia had a Range Rover Cuthbertson kit in Australia during the 1980's when Range Rover sponsored several years of alpine ski events at Guthega.

    Regarding Tickfords there were at least 5 on the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme.

    There is at least 2 currently in existance in Australia. One in Brisbane about to move to Sydney and another dissassembled in Melbourne.

    In addition to the Land Rover factory welder in Adelaide, there is another genuine 80" welder in Melbourne, accompanied by an genuine 86" and an aftermarket 80" welder. The 86" welders didn't have their own chassis number sequence the same as the 80".

    The 81" Rolls Royce B40 engined vehicle is one of those mythical vehicles. There are rumours of it returning to the UK and others of it remaining in Australia. The 81" is not however a genuine Rover product, they were 80" built at Solihul under a MoD contract and before they were issued to operational units they were requisitioned as a test platform for the B40 engine. There was never any intention for an 81" B40 powered Land Rover to go into production.

    There were however a number of 80" Land Rovers which were fitted with ex-Austin Champ motors, although these were done while in private hands. The Austin Champ B40 engine is a different suffix to the engines tested in the Land Rover.

    Not sure what the mods'd have to say, but I'm always keen to see and hear about the rare and interesting units. About a year ago I was unlucky enough to miss seeing a Tickford 80" in Darwin as it had just been sold to someone in Queensland. I took the opportunity to look over his project 80" and running 88" S1s while I was there, though. I'm always on the lookout (at the moment I'm on the faint trail of a Series 2 Forward Control, and I've seen a Lightweight and a 101 around town a while ago).

    One of my friends mentioned the army trialling a Cuthbertson, but I don't know what Series, while he was stationed at Bandianna in the 60's.

    wasnt there a Cuthbertson sold not long ago on ebay, never mind i am thinking of something completely different, oh ok so i wasnt
