TD5 Exhaust question

I took my 2002 110 to a Land Rover dealer for a 100k service the other day I also mentioned the noise that was coming from underneath the drivers seat, when I started up the engine. Exhaust? Driveshaft?

They told me it needed a new front muffler and rather than pay a fortune in Land Rover parts to take it to a exhaust place, which I did.
Over the phone they quoted me $149, took it in this morning left them to it.
Got a phonecall and was told that it wasn't the front muffler but the Catolytic Converter $400 fitted.

Thing is does a TD5 diesel have a Catolytic converter? I rang the Land Rover dealer and their head mechanic told me that only the later models had them.

My new
Haynes book has no mention of one other than some 300ti engines had them

Anyway the upshot of it all is that I now have a Stainless steel box fitted on the exhaust just after the 90 degree bend in the exhaust comes level with the chassis. It has Cat0004 stamped on it.
The noise has gone! But I want to make sure I haven't been ripped off.

What I know about mechanics you can write on a postage stamp! But you knew that?

My 2005 has a cat. But you don't need the front muffler. Just get some one to take it off and put some straight pipe through. There is a very small increase in noise that you can only hear at low revs, but the turbo spools a bit better and it probably helps to keep the EGT down a bit.

AFAIK a 2002 model does not have a catalytic convertor, so you have been scammed. Not saying they ripped you off as $400 for a cat is not a bad price. Just be careful to observe any lack in power etc. On the good side you car will be more enviro friendly. I would ask to see the removed cat and get them to show you it was infact a cat. It is fairly easy to tell with most cats being ribbed and flatter than a normal muffler. The normal muffler is a long , wide round type. Keep us informed of any noticeable changes.
I did not think they came out with cats until 2004/05.
I am actually going to have my front muffler removed when time and money permit to aid the turbo to spool up quicker.

Up until recently I was just running the very rear muffler and nothing else. Its a pretty cool note that you get.

It won;t take you long to save up! Mine cost $80 supplied and fitted. Not a whole lot of difference but a bit better down low.

Yep looks like I may have been done but hey the noise has gone.
I will have to call in to see them! I will know about the reduced power as we are moving to QLD next week.
