    Lost 5th Gear

    Hi all,
    I have a 1998 2L TD Freelander.

Has anyone ever lost fifth gear?
It always grated a bit going in and now does not exist spinning freely.

Also wondering what a vague fix/cost would be?

    Hi Lavers,

Sorry I am not able to help with this one as this would have to be quite rare - most gearbox issues with early freelanders are in fact caused by clutch problems.

Before pulling anything apart I would get the clutch hydraulics checked out first - they are a sealed unit so there is no serviceable master or slave cylinder that play with.

Costs on repair - expensive if you get someone to do it. In theory the gearbox can go out through the front passenger wheel arch but probably just as easy to the engine/gearbox/IRD unit out - time consuming so $$$.

    Thanks Garry

I have had some minor clutch issues in the past so will check that out first.

The clutch replacement is simple, and under 200$ from memory. I snapped mine off driving down the road. Though not engaging 5th gear does sound concerning. Probably a simple fix once out, so i'd speak to a gearbox mechanic.

    Cheers!

    Unhappy Melted end of mainshaft.

    Hmmm
Finaly got the car in the shop and gear box out.

Apparently it ran low on oil and has melted the end of the mainshaft....Only one gear box mechanic in Sydney will tackle the issue.

I can hear the $$$ starting to stack up.

Look on ebay UK for a replacement, or ask a few land rover wreckers. If its the same GB as the 1.8 (which i believe but cant guarantee) then the engine will die long before the gearbox.

    Cheers!
