Mosquito Plague Inside Defender

This is odd....

I was fidgetting around with my stereo (long story - won't bore everyone with details) and noticed the inside of the Defender's cabin was full of mosquitoes. Not huge numbers, but at least five or six that I could see. Kept getting in my face and I'm sure I sealed a couple inside the dash when I put the stereo back in.

At first I thought they might have just come in through the door, but later on when I got in to go to the shops, same thing. Mozzies everywhere!

We had plenty of rain here in Brisbane just over a week ago, but it has been very cold and dry for the past four days or so. I haven't had the A/C running for at least a fortmight so there shouldn't be any condensation from it anywhere.

So where could these little so-and-sos be breeding that would enable them to be inside the cabin? It's a new Defender and, believe it or not, doesn't leak. It's suitably well sealed so when you close the last door it will often take two goes because of the air pressure inside.

Another interesting thing, do people find their Land Rovers attracting more than their fair share of spiders and cobwebs? Even though ours gets driven nearly every day there always seems to be a cobweb on it or in it somewhere and quite often there is a spider of some description running around inside. Nearly caused my wife to jump out onto the road at 60kph on one occasion.

I know it's a "safari" vehicle, but the wildlife mine seems to attract in the car port is ridiculous!

the interior doesnt happen to have a fair amount of black does it?

Probably best to fumigate the interior of the Defender. Buy one of those fumigation cans, wind up all the windows and let it rip. Oh, be sure not to stay inside the vehicle whilst the chemicals are at work.

Funny you should mention that, we always have problems with mozzies in the Landies. I can understand the SIII, which has no windows, but even the Rangie has it's fair share. The strange thing being, we even get them at this time of the year when it's damn cold! And yes, spiders & cobwebs are part of the course!

Yes, it's pretty much all black inside except for the roof lining.

I didn't know that! I don't know about fumigation but maybe I could get a small mozzie zapper to hang from the rear vision mirror...

That's what I thought - why now when it's so cold? I don't remember having this many mozzies in the car through summer - even when it was really wet.

But has anyone noticed how BIG the mozzies are nowadays? I swear, some of the ones we get in the house are nearly the size of a small bird! (Well, I may be exaggerating a bit, but you get the idea)

One landed at the Cairns airport a few years back and the refuelling guys managed to pump in 50l before they realised it was a mozzie.

Sounds exactly like the engine bay of a land rover !

in my Dad's Defender, I had a pet spider in the roof-window, and used to feed it mosquitoes caught in the vehicle. Leave the window ajar over night and by morning there would be a dozen mozzies. The spider lasted a good while until it had babies and went for a ride in the vacuum cleaner.
