    input shaft oil leak

    Hi fellow 11A owners.
I posted this question in the general technical section, I thought it would be better to try here in the 11 11A section.
The gear box input shaft has been leaking oil onto the clutch plate with obvious bad consequences. It is the suffix F box so it has the updated thrust bearing sleeve with an oil seal working on the outer circumference of the sliding sleeve. There is no oil groove (thread) on the input shaft, but there is also no oil seal in the inner side of the sliding sleeve, however I did find some remnants of very hard rubber inside the sleeve. The parts book (including the suffix F box) shows the new sliding sleeve part, but no mention of a seal or 'O' ring as a replacement part. Does anybody know what is meant to be in the sleeve to take up the rather large gap betwwen the sleeve and the input shaft?
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    Andy.

Try a Series 3 input shaft seal. I'm not sure if it fits, but a $5 seal to try it out wouldn't be a great loss. The only late 2a box I've had I changed to a Series 3 bellhousing.
If you really want the right seal first time, get hold of a set of Vernier callipers and measure inner diameter and outer diameter of the housing and shaft. (At about $30, my Verniers have proved well worth the price.) Measuring depth may also help, but nowadays seals don't come in a selection of widths. Most are about 10mm or 3/8".
    Good luck with it.

Am I correct in my recollection that the seal is actually just in front of the primary pinion bearing. Or is that only on the series III?

The other seal on the sealed units on the late 2a boxes is in front of the throw out bearing.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Hi Diana,
I have solved the problem, there is a seal inside the front end of the sleeve. It can be purchased from roverparts +, (and probably other parts suppliers) as a complete assy, being sleeve and seal, or you can aquire the seal seperately, but it is very difficult to remove the collar that retains it the seal in place. This only applies to the late 11A box fitted with what the factory claim to be a sealed sleeve.
However as the two seals, both inner and outer have to slide along their appropriate mating surfaces every time you operate the clutch, I wonder how long they will last?
    Andy.
