Defender 130 TD5 Fuel filter water light

Has anyone had a problem with this electrical circuit? Was traveling through steady rain for a couple hours. A couple days later I noticed the fuel filter water warning light was on. Fitted new fuel filter IAW the manual but the warning light remains on. Removed the sensor from the bottom of the filter again, cleaned with compressed air, replugged it back into the system withouty installing it back into the filter and the light remains on.
So obviously a fault somewhere in the circuit. Where to look?
 Thanks
