agreed, time for new CV's but first double check that the CDL is actually unlocked.

If the noise occurs when the vehicle is moving in a turn with the steering wheel stationary, then I agree with Dave. But if you mean the noise occurs when you move the steering wheel, but stops when you hold it still, even if the vehicle is moving on a turn, then that is a different problem.

In this case, the first thing I would do is check the level of the power steering fluid - if it is low, fill it up and find where it is leaking. If it is not low, suspect a loose drive belt on the pump (can't remember the setup on that model) or a pump on the way out.

Does this occur at any steering position or on full lock? It may be that your tyres are rubbing on the radius arm if full lock only.

    200tdi.
If it doing it with the vehicle stationary, check the tension on the power steering drive belt, coz it may be 'hopping' under load.

as jdnsw says noise occurs when you move the steering wheel, but stops when you hold it still, even if the vehicle is moving on a turn this is what is happening and the steering wheel is jerking with a loud noise as well thanks

OK - it is a probably problem with the power steering. Most likely low fluid - check the level, and if it is low as I expect, find where it is leaking and fix it. If it is not low, then it is either the belt slipping or a problem with the pump, perhaps an air leak or blockage (or both) on the suction hose from the reservoir to the pump.

A slight possibility is that it is the universal joints on the steering column either seized or loose, but that should be easy to check.

If this does not help you to find the problem, I suggest you take it to a mechanic for diagnosis.
