Wheels/Tyres for RWC.

Ok, getting an RWC is turning into a complete farce for my D2 with every place i take it to seeming to invent their own particular picky annoying reason for not just passing the thing.

It's now at garage number three who have come back with the most reasonable list of other requirements to pass it so far. No problems with the extractors, no issues with the slightly worn steat bolster apparently being likely to snag you on exit and cause the world to stop spinning, and a perfectly reasonable list of small items to fix.

The only issue that these have flagged up that neither of the other two garages who wanted to replace pretty much the whole car came up with is that apparently although the tyres are brand new, they are not technically legal on the D2 as they don't quite meet the required load rating (104 and the minimum is apparently 105). Argghhhhh!

Has anyone else had this issue with the BFG A/T 235/70/16s? They seem like a common enough fitment so it just seems that wherever i take the car to they are just finding some way of trying to extract more cash. I can't help wondering if i was to do a little more work on my Aussie accent as opposed to wandering in with the Scottish one i seem to be lumped with presently then perhaps they might not be trying it on quite so much.....

Now since i am rapidly running out of energy to take the car anywhere else i'm looking at options:

1. Trying to convince them not to be such *#**!#*'s and just to leave the damn tyres alone.

2. Swap the wheels/tyres off my L322 onto the Discovery for a couple of hours to get it through if they will fit/be legal. It runs 19" and not sure if they are the same stud pattern/offset etc so this may not be an option.

3. Buy the cheapest set of wheels/legal tyres i can from a Discovery/P38/etc if they will fit to get it through then sell them again afterwards.

What do you think, I gather from a search that P38 wheels will be fine but does anyone know if L322 ones would do the job enough to get it passed?

L322 uses different wheel nuts, the D2 wheel nuts will not fit into the L322 rim – not sure if the wheel will fit on D2 with the rangie wheel nuts.
Some tyre outlets will sell anything it's not hem that get caught... do you know anyone well enough to borrow a set of tyres, I know it’s a big ask

Spoken to the garage and using the L322 wheels seems to be a non starter apparently anyway since they need to be on there for 30 days whilst the RWC is valid otherwise the garage who issues the RWC can be investigated. Blah blah blah.

Thinking buying a set of cheap old Discovery/RR wheels/tyres is going to be the best way forwards. Anyone in/around Melb got a set they would like to sell in good legal condition?

It's not - this is being done prior to VIV inspection and then new rego since i bought it as a repairable write-off.

I get the impression my chain is being yanked at evey opertunity too, however seem to be distinctly powerless to prevent it.

I just did some research on the load rating of your tyres.

You may be in a spot of bother with the load rating. As they are underrated for your car you may have an insurance issue in the future should you blow a tyre. Your best bet may be to move on the rubber - sell them, and get something rated at 105 or better. you may even be able to trade them in at a BFG dealer. The 245/75/16 is a good size and should still be within the margins for re-registration.

As for this type of rego, I am surprised they are not also asking for a new windscreen.

I would be congratulating them for picking the tyres..
Yes tyres are a major thing & Isurance companies like to get out of things quickly...that was there get out clause.
These are not a common fitment to D2's for that matter.
People still fit them at there own risk probably because they are none the wiser.
The load index is wrong & from memory so is the speed rating.
I would see if someone on the list wants a set of BFG's for a D1 & sell them & buy a set of new tyres for the D2.
General Grabber AT2's in the size mentioned 245/75 will still meet legal requiremnets from memory, which are a near copy of BFG A/t's if that is what u are after.

The Discoverys max load on the D2 is even determined by the load rating on the tyre, and I would assume the D1 is the same as it ran the same tyre. I wouldn't run a tyre that is under the load rating at all, as I tend to thing that even 105 is too low already.

The other thing, is that I also wouldn't run the 245/75-16 as you may find that this is outside of the VicRoads guidelines and get bounced again due to excessive diameter.

With the current RR rims, you can make them fit apparently. Use the rim with the wheel nuts that came with it. The wheelstud threads are the same, and likewise so is the PCD. Its only the centralising hub that is different in diameter. On Ebay, buy a set of the centralising rings to suit that rim to the D2. They are polymer and not expensive. NB I have not done this. P38 wheels are interchangable.

If things are not going your way, you may be able to borrow a set of tyres/rims from someone that runs 2 sets. Do the inspection and return the tyres/rims with a case of good beer.
