What a great piece of history.

730 quid; a lot of money given the average wage. I wonder at how that compares with $50,000 for a new defender.

    Lovely looking S1 paul

In 1956 my father, who would have been on about average income, was making less than ten pounds (A) a week. Also at around that time our house (on seven acres three miles from Parramatta) was valued at a thousand pounds.

That a beauty, is there a way to convert the 730 quid into a today dollar figure?

Bit of a thread drift but here you go:

Average weekly wage in 1956 was about 17 pounds. It would have taken you about 42 weeks pay to pay for the Series 1. (Based on 730 pounds on road with a winch)

Average weekly wage in 2008 is about $1150, that is about 47 weeks wage (Based on $55,000 on road with a winch)

Actually I was quite surprised that the number of weeks is pretty close I had always thought that a car was still quite a luxury in the 50’s .

(Don’t flame me if I’ve stuffed the maths – I aint a statistician or an accountant – just thought it’d would be an interesting comparison!)

Edit - I think I do need an accountant because I just realised I haven't taken out income tax --- doh!

Your figures suggest that my memory of my father's income may have been about 1950 not 1956 - and there was a lot of inflation in that period.

Cars were more of a luxury then, but I think you will find that at that time the Landrover sold for little more than the Holden car - which was just about the cheapest you could get. Relative to other cars it is now a lot more expensive than it was fifty years ago.

And I think that the proportion of tax paid on an average income may well be less than it was then.

One also has to calculate the fact that that vehicle was sold in GB£ not Australian £ (pounds), so the comparison with what someone earned in Australia was different to UK earnings.

Did someone pick the vehicle up in London or was it a private export/import?

Here’s another way of looking at it:

    Fuel cost about 6c a litre in 1956. http://www.choice.com.au/files/f119367.pdf

730 pounds ($1460) would buy 24,334 litres of petrol

$55,000 dollars would buy 34,375 litres of unleaded (at $1.60 per litre)

On that equivalence the series 1 would cost about $78,000 today

The Defender will still come with only 1 wiper motor for the front windscreen, the wiper on the invoice was for a second wiper for the passengers windscreen.

Back in 1956 the door frames were galvanised and have lasted for 52 years, the doors on the 2008 Defender are at best zinc-anneal and will last about 10 to 15 years.

Having been at Trivett's in Parramatta a couple of months ago and saw daylight through the bottom of the rear passengers door seal on a pre-delivery 110 wagon, you realise that the door seals on the 2008 Defender are still no better than the ones used in 1956.

I would however love to have a winch fitted for 10 shillings or $A1 at 14/02/1967 decimal currency conversion rate.
