    Td5 Chipping advice etc.

Hi all, first post and hopefully about to purchase a 2005 Td5 Defender....no doubt I will be looking for assistance and advice at some point!

Wanna start by getting my head around the ECU upgrades. Any advice on best option for the Td5 and whether an upgraded intercooler is of significant benefit on top of that?

Also if anyone has a gas injection fitted in conjunction with upgraded ECU I would be interested in your comments.

and what benefits from changing the "EGR" set-up ?

    Cheers

ecu remap is definitely the way forward. The two other things to do is put an egr bypass kit on it and remove the front exhaust pipe (will have a CAT in it) and replace with a straight through pipe.

    chippings great contact tombie...

removing the EGR prevents it from fouling open and constantly recirculating exhaust gasses which robs you of power and economy.

    Chip upgrade TD5 Defender

I have Tombraider's ECU remapping in mine, and still love it. Have had it for 2 1/2 years now. Have not bothered with any other upgrade, as I don't want to race my defender, and it has all the power I need. I got the Discovery upgrade witch comes to about 120-130 kw vs the 89 that it comes standard with. He can re map it to 170, but I was worried about wear and tear on the engine. Fully loaded with roof racks, am getting about 11l per 100k, which I feel is good for a car with the aerodynamics of a brick.
    Good luck in your purchase.

I only had mine for 2 weeks before i got it chipped and it is the cheapest upgrade u can do for the big power and torque increase.

It is well worth doing the exhaust and intercooler later on if u are not affraid to spend some more money.

Triumph Rover Spares have the best looking intercooler that i have found so far in Australia as it has fully welded tanks and a very good core in it

The only down side is when u get more power u want another gear on the highway but hey that is where a discovery transfer case comes in

Chipping can help with economy as long as you don't stick the boot in.
Mine has upgraded intercooler, 3 inch exhaust and an ECU upgrade. It's putting out stupidly big numbers. I know of at least one rig that was built to put out more power than mine but the guy who own's it built his specificaly for more power, He took his to the bloke who did mine and simply stated he had to have more power than my rig!

The EGR must be there for a reason? Why would they spend money on it otherwise.

    What does it do?

its to do with emision regulations...,it allows exhaust gas into the inlet manifold, not real good for the engine,or as blk said economy or power

many guys replace it with a blank off kit

I suppose it depends on your attitude to emissions. It's surely in everyone's best interests to keep them to a minimum?

true......but i think the egr fails, and it is easier to blank it off than replace it .i have left mine as is as it is ok.

in real terms with or without, probably makes very little difference to emissions as i think it only operates at certain revs.,at certain times.

and every one likes to give ther engines more economy,power&longitivity......

    hope this helps
