    101 Canvas (Tilt)

I am considering changing my 101 back to a standard canvas top (why are they called tilts?)

From the UK they are about $900 landed - does anyone know where I can get a new one in Australia - Anthony Johnson is one place - any where else? Cost here?

    Thanks

900 dollars landed sounds good to me.
It may cost 1200 dollars to get one made to original standards locally
The one on my 101 came from Tarmore? trim the people who made them standard.
It fits well and has been very water proof.
It does flap or do any thing wrong at speed.
The one thing I did do was replace the original rope tie down at the bottom of the canvas with shock cord to make dropping the tail gate and sides quicker and easier.
If you go ahead with one from over seas see if any saving can be made by getting two ?
A spare may come in handy as I plan to hang onto the 101 for a long time, but as always there is the old lack of money problem.
The standard 101 canvas, the way it buckles up and rolls up is the same as my 130 defender with the HCPU body canvas.
I had the canvas made for the back of my Studebaker 6x6 a few years ago now locally the way I wanted it with good quality canvas and fittings etc and there wasnt much change from 2000 dollars.
I have a Jeep which needs a new canvas top after 25 years of my ownership and much of that outside in the weather and the hardest part is finding someone who is prepared to go the hard yards and do it properly and I expect that job would be 1500 to 2000 dollars due to the many fittings involved.
    900 dollars sounds good.

Thanks Ron - from the Uk drab olive is just over 300 pounds - other colours are just under - this is about $700 with the rest being postage. Like you - money is tight so I am looking to see if I can get out of it as cheap as possible - if this is going to be up around - $900 plus then I will just replace the canvas I have and leave my tin roof. I have the canvas and minimal professional trimming will be needed.

From what you have inidcated it will cost a lot more to get a proper top made here than it would to import one.

    Cheers

I got a brand newey made for $400. they used the old one as a template and used to metal buckles from the old on the new.

    Fantastic job

problem is it was made by the crims in casurina prison here in WA. They charge for materials only as the labour is rehab.

Only the pommy's call them tilts, in the parts manuals for the other models, they are always called hoods and in Australia the Army blokes call them tarps while civilians called them soft tops. At least that's what they called them up to the 1980s.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Seems strange to call them tilts - I did a check in the thesaurous and nothing comes up even close to "canvas", roof or whatever.

Anyway - the nut is on its way.

The term tilt has come to light on another forum.

"The word (in this context) has it's origins from the 15th century Old English word "teld", meaning 'tent' and the Danish "telt", which was small canopy or awning extended over the sternsheets of a boat."

    And.

"–noun 1. a cover of coarse cloth, canvas, etc., as for a wagon.
    2. an awning.
–verb (used with object) 3. to furnish with a tilt.

    Origin:
1400–50; late ME, var. of tild, OE teld; c. G Zelt tent, ON tjald tent, curtain"

    Cheers

What did you end up doing Garry?

I have found mine is a bit threadbare (and leaking) and thinking about a new one.
Got a quote from this mob All Wheel Trim Ltd. Land Rover 101FC page
For about 350 pounds - but heres the rub - 145 pounds postage

I thought the top on yours was purpose made at a Gold Coast upholsterer? Obviously not.

I managed to get a second hand one from Anthony Johnson - is starting to wear out a bit but still waterproof and serviceable.

I think you will find the landed price for the All Wheel Trim canvas is about the the best you can manage for a new canvas. You will pay $1500-$2000 to get one made locally and then it may not be right. When I need a new one it will be from All Wheel Trim.

Want to see if my new, unused one fits?
I think I paid $700 for it. Haven't had it out of the packet.
