    Broke an axle yesterday.

I broke an axle (long) yesterday on the way to work. I changed from second to third, and bang, no drive. I last replaced this axle in April this year. I have not yet broken a short axle. I have owned this vehicle for about four years.

    Record so far: Long = 2, Short = 0.

The axle that broke was purchased N.O.S. at the Cooma swapmeet, from a bloke who got it from a particular company in Melbourne who distribute a large catalogue of spare parts. I have now installed a N.O.S. Australian Army axle, which had a British Army N.S.N. on it. I expect more durability from this item.

What are other people's records of short versus long axle breakage ratio?

    Aaron.

I have been using my current 2a as a farm vehicle for almost twenty years, (often heavily loaded or towing and over some pretty rough country) and the only "axle" I have broken turned out to be the rear diff centre. In forty-six years of driving Series Landrovers, I have broken exactly one axle (long) on the first 2a I owned in the mid sixties (and I wasn't driving it at the time). But I have seen a number of others broken, and my impression is that they vary quite significantly in strength, and not necessarily by manufacturer. The one I broke was the factory original one. My impression is that the factory ones deteriorated in the seventies.

In the last 15 years, I have broken:

In my 109" IIA (235/85-16 tyres and a light right foot):
1x long and 1x short 10 spline axle (then upgraded to a salisbury)
    1x front 4.7:1 crownwheel
1x 24 spline salisbury rear (aftermarket)

I then upgraded to a Maxi-Drive in the rear and a Stage 1 axle in the front, and haven't broken anything since - despite upgrading to 33" tyres and driving a lot more difficult terrain.

    In my father's 88" IIA (7.50x16's)
1x short axle (driving DOWNHILL! on a major rd)
    1x rear diff (4.7)
Possibly a couple more I have forgotten.
